NYMC Celebrated Among 2025 Doctors of Distinction Honorees
NYMC was among the celebrated honorees at the Westfair Communications Inc., annual Doctors of Distinction award ceremony. Hosted in the Skyline Dining Room on November 13, the evening was emceed by Michelle Novotny, Ed.D., top, right, senior associate dean for admissions and administration, with remarks by Alan Kadish, M.D., bottom, NYMC and TU president, and keynote address by Vilma E. Bordonaro, M.B.A., top, left, chief of staff. Among the honorees, bottom from left, were Augustine Moscatello, M.D., M.S., professor and chair of otolaryngology, who received the Doctor without Boundaries Award; Supriya S. Jain, M.D., FSCMR, FACC, FAAP, professor of pediatrics and radiology, and her husband who received the Power Couple Award; and Rahim Hirani, M.S., M.D.-Ph.D. candidate, who received the Promise for the Future Award.

Siqi You Selected as NYS Representative in the State of the States and AUCD Data Ambassador Program
Siqi You, M.S., M.P.H., J.D., a Dr.P.H. candidate in the SHSP, was selected as the New York State representative in the State of the States Association of University Centers on Disability (AUCD) Data Ambassador Program. Over the next year, she will develop a NYS data profile to share with state disability partners and assembly members. You looks forward to learning how to communicate state-level disability policy trends through data visualization and translation, and presenting her findings at the program’s conference. “NYMC has given me a strong foundation in public health leadership, health policy analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration,” says You. “The Dr.P.H. program’s emphasis on evidence-based practice and community engagement has prepared me well to connect research with real-world policy impact.”

NYMC Public Health Students and Alumni Shine at APHA Conference
NYMC students and alumni proudly showcased their research at the 2025 American Public Health Association (APHA) conference in Washington, D.C. The four-day national event brought together more than 12,000 public health professionals, for a chance to network, collaborate, and learn. Arpit Joshi, M.B.B.S., a Dr.P.H. candidate, Mary Kovoor, Dr.P.H. ’25, M.P.H. ’20, M.B.A., right, and Sumeet Gill, M.P.H. ’18, Dr.P.H. ’25, presented posters highlighting their research. Also in attendance were Dr.P.H. candidates Azzam Althomali, M.P.H. ’22, left; Basim Alkhlfan, M.S., second from left; Ahmed Quraani, M.P.H., third from left; Temitope Kayode, M.P.H., M.B.B.S., D.R.H., D.H.A., second from right; and Nick Sekkas, M.S., third from right, director of enrollment management in the Office of SHSP Admissions. This annual conference continues to be an exciting opportunity for NYMC’s public health community to share groundbreaking work, engage with public health leaders, and represent the excellence of SHSP.

EHS Hosts Multi-Agency Biosafety and WMD Tabletop Exercise
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) collaborated with internal and external stakeholders to lead the 2025 Biosafety/Weapons of Mass Destruction tabletop drill on November 5. The event brought together 30 participants from the FBI, Westchester County Department of Emergency Service, Westchester Medical Center, Westchester County Police Department/HazMat, Westchester County BSL3 Laboratory, Westchester County Department of Health, as well as staff from NYMC'S health services, public safety, research/IBC, facilities, information technology, and the Center for Disaster Medicine. Presentations were offered on medical implications from high-risk biological exposure, weapons of mass destruction risks from drones, and how to identify insider threats. The group also participated in a tour of the specialty BSL3 laboratory and EHS staff conducted a mock medical extraction exercise from the lab using their new blanket carrier.

NYMC and TU Set to Host Webinar Series: “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”
NYMC and TU will present the “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web” on November 20. Moderated by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, the dynamic 90-minute webinar will feature faculty experts who will discuss recommendations for flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines, the status of monitoring infectious diseases in the community with wastewater measurements, over-prescribing antibiotics for children, de-escalation of therapy for multiple sclerosis, and the long-term effects of immunosuppressive therapy for multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other diseases on oral health. CME credits are available upon request.

Touro Dental Health’s 8th Annual Smiles for Veterans Day Sees More Veterans This Year Than Ever Before
Veterans Day, on November 11, was a joyous event at Touro Dental Health. Veterans filled all the dental chairs in the Dutchess Patient Clinic for the annual honor. Touro Dental Health provided free dental care to veterans, including dental exams, x-rays and cleanings. The day included a special lunch for patients and special guests. During the month of November, Touro Dental Health continues to offer this service for veterans, military personnel and their families—a way of thanking our veterans for their service, not just on Veteran’s Day.

Rahim Hirani, M.S., M.D.-Ph.D. candidate, was awarded the Promise for the Future Award at Westfair Business Journal’s Doctors of Distinction Awards on November 13, in recognition of his meaningful innovations in medical research, his commitment to advancing health equity through service and scholarship, and his embodiment of the promise of a future leader in medicine.

When Donna Egan, M.S., CSP, CHMM, CSHM, director of EHS, is clocked in at NYMC, she’s the queen bee of biological, chemical, radiation and general safety oversight—keeping the students, faculty, and staff safe across the NYMC campus, the TCDM campuses in New York and New Mexico, and the Touro University campuses in New York. When she’s off the clock, she continues to bee busy—tending to her hives as a beekeeper.
