NYMC Faculty Research New Therapies to Treat Bladder Cancer 

Bladder cancer, diagnosed in 6,900 New Yorkers in 2016, is the third most commonly diagnosed solid tumor in the state and the fifth most common cause of cancer-related death. Treatments for low stage disease, which make up 80 percent of new cases, are intended to prevent progression to high stage disease and the morbidity and cost of radical treatments. George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, FAcEM, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, was appointed to editorial board of  the Journal of Emergency Medical Services.
 
Robert Ollar, Ph.D., top left, clinical assistant professor of neurology, was a guest speaker at a discussion on October 27 on the current wave of COVID-19 in northeastern Pennsylvania hosted by U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright, bottom, representing Pennsylvania's 8th Congressional District. The presentation video will be shared with the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The 18th International Winter Eicosanoid Conference (WEC) took place virtually on October 15. The biennial meeting is co-organized by Michal L. Schwartzman, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology, and Gail Anderson, administrative assistant, is the conference coordinator. The WEC serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas and new developments in the field of eicosanoids and their use in development of novel therapeutics to conquer disease. This year's meeting included the John C. McGiff, M.D., Memorial Award Lecture, which was given by Dr. Michal Schwartzman who presented "The Road to Discovery:GPR75 - The 20-HETE Receptor." The late Dr. McGiff, was the former Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and founder of the WEC. The virtual meeting with more than 200 attendees included 51 poster presentations in the categories of cardiovascular, diabetes/obesity, stroke, omics/metabolism, cancer, novel therapeutics, and drug development. Senior and junior investigators, postdoctoral fellows, students and laboratory staff from institutes in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Lebanon, and the United States presented posters, including five Ph.D. candidates and one lab manager from the Department of Pharmacology:
