GSA Adapts to a New Normal

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS), with its new slate of officers, is reinventing itself for the 2020-2021 academic year. The GSA will continue to provide a full program of activities that includes student advocacy, community service, lectures by noted visiting scientists, social activities and student assistance, albeit virtually. "Our goal for this year is to expand the amount of active students in the GSA, although this quickly became a challenge with everything being online," explained Harry Haran, president of the GSA and an M.S. student in basic medical sciences. TCDM Opens New Pediatric Practice

The Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM) at New York Medical College officially opened its new state-of-the-art pediatric dental practice, Touro Dental Health Kids, on September 29. Designed with the needs of TCDM's youngest patients and their families in mind, the new six-chair pediatric practice boasts 2,600 square feet of modern, light-filled space, with four operatories and two spacious, fully private rooms especially designed to treat children in a quiet distraction free environment. Each dental unit in the space is equipped with nitrous oxide for mild sedation when needed to aid in comfort and alleviate dental anxiety. Read the full article on Touro Dental Health Kids.
Touro to Host Fall Faculty Development Workshop

The Touro College Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is sponsoring a webinar, "Teaching Distracted Minds: Old Challenges, New Contexts," on October 30, from 10:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET for all faculty members. The keynote by James M. Lang, Ph.D., English professor and director of the D'Amour Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, will draw upon scholarship from history, neuroscience, and education to show that distractions are endemic to the human condition and can't be walled out of the physical classroom or online course. Participants will learn about a variety of strategies to create and develop experiences for students that cultivate and sustain attention. An interactive workshop on "Small Teaching in the COVID Era: From Minor Changes to Major Learning," will follow covering key principles that can improve learning in almost any type of college or university course, including both face-to-face and online courses and everything in between. Register for the webinar here.
