GSA Welcomes New Slate of Officers and Looks Forward to An Event-Filled Year
The Graduate Student Association (GSA) in the GSBMS welcomed its new officers for the 2022-2023 academic year and is looking forward to connecting with group members through various events such as a 5K event in partnership with Feeding Westchester and a big-little reveal to facilitate mentorship and communication within the GSA. StuHe Begins 2022-2023 Academic Year With Sights Set on Professional Development
The Student Healthcare Executives (StuHe) in the School of Health Sciences and Practice embarked on the 2022-2023 academic year with a meet-and-greet session as the group looks ahead to a year of supporting and connecting with public health students and their interests. GSBMS and SOM Establish Conditional Admittance Agreement
The GSBMS and the SOM have entered into an agreement to guarantee conditional admittance for students in the Accelerated Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Master's Program (AMP) of the GSBMS, or students who have completed this program, and who seek admission to the NYMC SOM, if they meet certain academic performance benchmarks. NYMC Students and Faculty Provide Free Screenings At White Plains Health Fair
Students and faculty from the SHSP and SOM helped educate the Westchester County community at the City of White Plains Neighborhood Health Fair and See, Test and Treat Program on October 1, at Calvary Baptist Church. Students volunteered to help provide free screenings for speech and hearing, and share their knowledge on environmental health. Read the full article on the fair.

Julie DiMartino, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology and anatomy, was an invited speaker at Matrix Biology Europe 2022. She presented “ECM and Cancer Dormancy: From the Seed Perspective,” remotely on September 28, and received the 2022 Rupert Timpl Award in recognition of her contributions to the extracellular matrix field as outstanding young investigator.

Victor Garcia, Ph.D., assistant professor of pharmacology, was chosen as a 2022 Sinsheimer Scholar Award recipient and awarded a $150,000 two-year grant by the Alexandrine and Alexander L. Sinsheimer Fund, which provides grants to medical schools to support scientific research relating to the prevention and cure of human diseases.

Jessica Hochberg, M.D., right, associate professor of pediatrics, and Yaya Chu, Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, successfully competed for a Scholars Grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels for $300,000 over a two-year period on the translational subject of "Overcoming Immunotherapy Resistance in Childhood Burkitt Lymphoma.”

Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, was selected as Top Global Health Advocate of the Year for 2022 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership, dedication and commitment to the healthcare industry.

The Department of Ophthalmology was well represented at the Women in Ophthalmology (WIO) Summer Symposium that took place in Monterey, California, as well as virtually, from August 25 to 26. WIO is an internationally recognized organization, an affiliate society of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), which provides scientific/medical education and professional development resources for women in ophthalmology.
