5th Annual Meeting of the Minds Showcases Research and Innovation

NYMC and WMCHealth celebrated the 5th Annual Meeting of the Minds Research Symposium, which brought together more than 40 speakers and moderators, including faculty, scientists, clinicians, and trainees, for a day dedicated to scientific discovery, collaboration, and innovation on October 7. Inspired by Auguste Rodin's iconic masterpiece, The Thinker, this year's symposium, chaired by Fawaz Al-Mufti, M.D., professor of neurology, neurosurgery, and radiology, and Christopher Leonard, Ph.D., professor of cell and molecular physiology, celebrated the intellectual curiosity that drives scientific progress and the determination required to transform ideas into discoveries that ultimately improve patients' lives. The program opened with remarks by Neil Schluger, M.D., dean of the SOM, on building the next generation of academic medicine, and David Lubarsky, M.D., M.B.A., FASA, president and CEO of WMC Health Network, professor of anesthesiology and distinguished visiting professor of public health, on innovation across an academic health system. The afternoon keynote by Clifford Bleustein, M.D., M.B.A., "From Clinic to Company: A Physician's Path in Health Innovation," highlighted the journey from clinical insight to entrepreneurship. From artificial intelligence and biotechnology to translational science, clinical trials, and emerging technologies, the symposium showcased the breadth of research and innovation across NYMC and WMC Health. A particular highlight was the presentation and recognition of six translational science initiatives, whose teams received awards in celebration of their innovative research and commitment to advancing scientific discoveries toward meaningful clinical applications. These initiatives reflect NYMC’s institutional investment in moving promising ideas from the laboratory to the bedside. “Five years in, Meeting of the Minds has become more than an annual symposium. It is a celebration of the people, ideas, and collaborations that move medicine forward,” said Dr. Al-Mufti. “Because the future of medicine does not begin with answers. It begins with the courage to ask better questions, the curiosity to pursue them, and the collaboration to turn discovery into impact.”

From the Collection of Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A.

Be sure to stop by the Chancellor's newest exhibit, presenting items of interest on the history of medicine and science, displayed on the wall to the left of Doc's Café in the Basic Sciences Building. The current exhibit features First Day Covers, an envelope or postcard that has a newly issued postage stamp affixed and is postmarked on the first day the stamp is for sale. The covers, postmarked May 17, 1984, in New York City, feature a 20-cent health research stamp. One cover honors Bela Schick, top photo, the father of modern pediatrics who was the first to prove that illnesses following scarlet fever were allergic in nature and he discovered the skin test, known as the Schick Test, for determining susceptibility to diphtheria. The other honors Simon Flexner, bottom photo, pathologist, microbiologist and first director of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, who was the brother of Bernard Flexner, a distinguished attorney and Zionist leader, and Abraham Flexner, whose studies and reports revolutionized medical education in the U.S.

Survival Benefits Outweigh Cognitive Risks for Diabetics Taking GLP-1s

The decreased risk of death for patients with type 2 diabetes treated with GLP-1 analogues outweighs the increased risk of cognitive impairment, though age plays a role, according to a study by NYMC students, including Isaac Thorman, SOM Class of 2027, and faculty, presented at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in April.
