NYMC Pets The Stress Away
Faculty and students gleefully gathered to meet their furry, four-legged therapists for the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness’ (SMHW) Pet the Stress Away event on October 16. In partnership with Paws Crossed Animal Rescue, the Office tabled the event with informational pamphlets, snacks, tissues and lip balm in light of flu season. "Recognizing the many ways we can approach treating stress and providing additional support, pet therapy is a fun, easily accessible and universally enjoyable opportunity for those who like animals," said Robin Hershkowitz, M.S.W., LCSW-R, senior director of SMHW and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. “Evidence suggests pet therapy reduces the stress hormone cortisol, which is why dogs are used in medical and therapeutic settings. We were thrilled so many of our students and faculty were able to benefit from this event. Several students told me, ‘I really needed this today.’”
