NYMC Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The NYMC community rallied together in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, under the leadership of Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., M.P.H. ’23, dean of the GSBMS and professor of cell biology and anatomy, and Julie S. Di Martino, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell biology and anatomy, who are dedicated to advancing research and advocacy in the fight against breast cancer.

Furry Friends Bring Comfort to the College
Students, staff, and faculty found some well-deserved relaxation on October 16, in the Medical Education Center lobby, thanks to Annabelle and Muffin, two beloved dogs from Paws Crossed Animal Rescue. Hosted by the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness, the "Pet the Stress Away" event allowed attendees to take a break from their busy schedules and indulge in sweet treats, bringing much-needed joy and relief.

Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., vice chancellor of diversity and inclusion, associate dean of student affairs and associate professor of neurology and of medicine, was a panelist at the Healthcare Leaders of New York’s 8th annual Mini-Congress with the theme of “Resilient Leadership: Preparing for Tomorrow and Navigating the Future” on September 26. He participated in the panel, “Understanding Implicit Bias and its Impact on Healthcare Leadership.”

Arax Tanelian, Ph.D. '24, post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, presented “Sex-specific Microbial Responses to Single Prolonged Stress in Sprague-Dawley Rats,” at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, October 5-9 in Chicago. The co-authors were Bistra Nankova, Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics and biochemistry and molecular biology; Furong Hu, research associate in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Newborn Medicine; and Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

LaShari Valentin, Ph.D., M.B.A., associate vice chancellor for external academic relations, NYMC, and associate dean for academic affiliations and clinical programs, SOM, was selected as Mentor of the Year by her alma mater, Hampton University. She was inducted into Hampton University’s Forty Under 40 Society for alumni who uplift communities nationwide through professional and volunteer work during homecoming on October 24.

Marjorie Zauderer, M.D., M.S., FACP, professor of medicine, was presented with the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation’s 2024 Pioneer Award, honoring individuals who are pioneering scientific advances in mesothelioma research, treatment, care, support, education, and advocacy at the International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma in Chicago on October 18.
