Dr. Mitchell Cairo Awarded Grant to Support Osteosarcoma Research
Mitchell Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, cell biology and anatomy, medicine and of pathology, microbiology and immunology, will lead a team of researchers in a study to develop a novel immunotherapy approach to circumvent resistance to treatment and increase the overall survival rate in those with osteosarcoma. Eva Chorna, SOM Class of 2024, has worked with faculty advisor Cara Grimes, M.D., associate chair of research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the SOM, and her researcher team to analyze the ways people use Twitter to share information around obstetrics and gynecology and the types of users sharing information, and sometimes even misinformation. Amy Ansehl, D.N.P., RN, MSN, FNP-BC, left, associate dean of student experience, director of applied practice experience and associate professor of public health, Amy Brown, M.D., M.B.E., right, assistant professor of pediatrics and adjunct associate professor of public health represented the Children’s Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley, New York Medical College, Boston Children’s Health Physicians, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital and New York State Children’s Environmental Health Centers when they presented at the Med Tech Conference on October 28. The event, “What is Children’s Environmental Health and How Can it Fit into Your Career as a Health Professional” was sponsored by the Westchester County Youth Bureau and was attended by more than 350 participants including governmental leaders, students and public health professionals. They were joined by New York State Senate Majority Leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology of cell biology and anatomy, and vice chair of pediatrics, was an invited speaker at the European School of Hematology Seventh Translational Research Conference on Lymphoid Malignancies in Estoril, Portugal, on October 20 – 22. He presented “Optimizing Ex-Vivo Expansion of NK Cell Mediated Cellular Cytotoxicity By Obinutuzumab Combined With NKTR-255 in Burkitt Lymphoma.”

| | Danielle Diegisser, right, a second-year Ph.D. student in pharmacology, and Alexandra Wolf, left, a third-year Ph.D. student, were awarded for their research on the role of 20-HETE at the 19th International Winter Eicosanoid Conference in Baltimore, Maryland. Wolf, who was mentored by Victor Garcia, Ph.D. '15, center, assistant professor of pharmacology, presented on Deconstructing High Fat Diet-Induced Cardiometabolic Disease: The Role of the 20-HETE Receptor (GPR75). Diegisser, who was mentored by Dr. Garcia and Michal Laniado Schwartzman, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and of medicine and associate professor of Ophthalmology, presented on the Prevention and Reversal of Diet-Induced Obesity by the 20-HETE Receptor Blocker, AAA, and its Impact on Glucose Handling. They both earned the Outstanding Poster Award, with Wolf also earning the Prostaglandins and Other Lipid Mediators Young Investigator Award and Diegisser earning the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/ National Institute of Health Travel Award.
