NYMC Honors Distinguished Faculty and Alumni at Annual Founder’s Dinner 


The evening of October 26 was a special one for NYMC as guests gathered for the annual Founder’s Dinner at Marina Del Ray in the Bronx. More than 385 academic, healthcare, business, and community leaders came together to celebrate NYMC’s proud history and promising future and to honor distinguished faculty and alumni leaders for their impactful and transformative achievements. Proceeds of the evening benefit NYMC students through scholarships and important initiatives, and further NYMC’s mission to educate the next generation of physicians and healthcare providers, and support life-saving biomedical research. Students Get Creative with Pumpkin Carving 

 

Students enjoyed an evening of cider and donuts and showed off their creativity and sculpting skills at the Pumpkin Carving and Door Décor Contest sponsored by the Office of Student and Residential Life on October 25. Winners received swag NYMC backpacks. Students also enjoyed an evening of pumpkin carving and decorating Halloween-themed gingerbread houses on October 26 sponsored by the Garden Club and the Student Wellness Committee View the pumpkin carving photo gallery.


NYMC Participates in Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit

 

More than 300 middle and high school students, educators, parents, clinicians and community leaders joined New York's first Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit, on October 22, at the Sonesta Hotel in White Plains, New York, hosted by White Plains Hospital. They learned first-hand about the journey to becoming a physician from keynote speaker, Mill Etienne, M.D.’02, M.P.H., vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion and associate dean for student affairs, and associate professor of neurology and of medicine. SHSP Participates in United Nations Day


October 24 commemorates United Nations Day and NYMC SHSP was on hand to celebrate the 77th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter. Serving as liaisons to Sustainable Development Goal 3 Hub (Good Health and Wellbeing) for the United Nations Academic Impact, Padmini Murthy, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., M.Phil., CHES, professor of public health and global health director, and Amy Ansehl, D.N.P., R.N., M.S.N., FNP-BC, associate dean for School of Health Sciences and Practice student experience and director of applied practice experience, as well as associate professor of public health, were invited, along with an NYMC student, Maryam Albarakati, to participate in the special event at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. NYMC and TU Present 22nd COVID-19 Symposium

 

NYMC and TU hosted the 22nd COVID-19 Symposium on October 27. The webinar included a panel discussion on the new bivalent COVID-19 booster shots as well as presentations on the use of wastewater analysis to assess the presence of COVID-19 and polio in a population; reform and restructuring of the Centers for Disease Control; and the reappearance of polio in New York. Watch the full symposium.

Skyline Café Food Mart Set to Open November 3


Join NYMC for the grand opening of the new food mart in the Skyline Café at 19 Skyline Drive on Thursday, November 3. Provided by Canteen, the food mart will offer Kosher healthy snacks, drinks and fresh food and check-out will be contactless with mobile and touchless payment options. The food mart will be open six days a week, 24 hours a day and closed from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday for religious observances.

NYMC Reaches Out at Health and Wellness Fest


On October 22, members of the NYMC community joined more than 40 stakeholders who collaborated to launch the inaugural Health and Wellness Fest at Fox Lane High School in Bedford, New York. Recognizing the significant disconnect between suburban residents and community resources pertaining to health and wellbeing, a task force, the Health and Wellness Committee, spearheaded by Councilman Andres L. Castillo Quintana, far right, and chaired by Bruno S. Villazhinay Matute, M.P.H. ’22, second from right, a Dr.P.H. student in the SHSP and senior administrator in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, led the charge. ACCOLADES

Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, chaired the Seventh International Symposium on Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, on October 20-23, in New York City. The symposium welcomed 250 attendees from five continents and 40 countries, 50 faculty from around the world and more than 125 scientific abstract presentations.

Rahim Hirani, SOM Class of 2025, presented “The risk of mortality in elderly patients with emergently admitted appendicitis is 22 times higher than that in non-elderly patients: A retrospective analysis of 339,917 patients,” at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2022, in San Diego, California, on October 19.

Nicholas S. Janiga, J.D., left, vice president, chief legal counsel and assistant corporate secretary, was honored as a 2022 C-Suite Award winner at a celebration, on October 27, in Stamford, Connecticut. Westfair Communications created the awards to recognize outstanding leaders who create innovative ideas to propel progress and success in their organizations. Adam D. Hammerman, M.B.A., vice president and chief financial officer, a 2020 C-Suite Award winner, presented the award.

As part of President Joe Biden’s relaunch of the Cancer Moonshot initiative, Akiva P. Novetsky, M.D., associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, will lead the American Cancer Society’s new roundtable on cervical cancer aimed to spur changes and investment in combating cancer by bringing together scientists, the medical community, public health agencies, the private sector and community organizations. The roundtables on breast and cervical cancers are expected to increase access to screenings and quality care for breast and cervical cancer as well as new health policies and recommendations on strategies for reducing cancer disparities among racial and ethnic group.

Kristina Petersen, Ph.D., assistant dean of academic support programs and associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, received a 2022 Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Awards. The award is named for longtime AOA executive secretary Robert J. Glaser, M.D., and recognizes gifted teachers who have made outstanding contributions to medical education. recognizing gifted medical educators. She was recognized during the 2022 AAMC Awards Recognition Event, on October 26.

DID YOU KNOW?

Alumnus and faculty member Thomas Drysdale Buchanan, M.D. Class of 1897 (1876–1940), was the first person in the United States to hold the title “Professor of Anesthesiology.” Read all about Dr. Buchanan in an article published in the October issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, written by Nicholas Webb, MSIS, archivist and digital preservation librarian; Brigitte Burcescu, SOM Class of 2023; Apolonia E. Abramowicz, M.D., clinical professor of anesthesiology; and Garret Weber, M.D., clinical associate professor of anesthesiology.
