Founder’s Dinner Set to Honor Leaders in Health Care, Education, and Public Service
NYMC will celebrate three individuals whose leadership, service, and dedication have made a lasting impact on health care, education, and the broader community at the Founder’s Dinner on October 21, at the Greentree Country Club in New Rochelle, New York. The gala will honor John J. Connolly, Ed.D., former president and chief executive officer of NYMC and a pioneering leader in health care publishing; the late Alfred B. DelBello, whose distinguished career in public service helped shape Westchester County and advance regional health care, in a lasting tribute accepted by his wife, Dee DelBello; and Zvi Lefkovitz, M.D., director of leadership development, professor of radiology, and former chair of the Department of Radiology. NYMC Rallies for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The NYMC community came together in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at an event hosted by Marina K. Holz, Ph.D., M.P.H. ’23, Dr.P.H. ’24, vice chancellor for graduate and professional studies, dean of the GSBMS, professor of cell and molecular physiology, and professor of public health, and Julie S. Di Martino, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell and molecular physiology. The event, on October 5, honored the women, men, and families affected by breast cancer while raising awareness of NYMC’s groundbreaking research aimed at advancing our understanding of the disease.

Honoring Women in Medicine
Women physicians, faculty, and medical students, gathered in their white coats on September 24, to celebrate Women in Medicine Month. The School of Medicine community came together to honor the women who have helped shape the medical profession, those advancing it today, and the next generation of women physicians.

Office of Health Services Unveils Updated Spaces
The Office of Health Services hosted a reception on September 30, to debut their new look and thank the individuals and departments whose contributions helped make the improvements possible. The renovations include a new waiting area for students, reconfigured offices for greater efficiency, and a new conference room for staff meetings and trainings. A new kitchen area, updated flooring, a fresh coat of paint, and new furniture complete the refreshed space.

NYMC Community Builds Emergency Preparedness Skills at Annual Safety Event
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) teamed up with the School of Health Sciences and Practice, Office of Public Safety, Center for Disaster Medicine, and Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness to host the Third Annual Emergency Preparedness/Fire Safety Tabling Event on September 29. Participants learned how to use a fire extinguisher, “Stop the Bleed,” eyewash station use and maintenance, eye protection, and AED use, put their skills to the test with safety trivia, and competed in a personal protection equipment relay race. The Department of EHS also hosted two training classes on the important topic of eyewash use and weekly inspection requirements on September 29. More than 50 researchers participated and received a free pair of safety glasses or goggles.

Marking one year since opening its doors, Touro Dental Health New Mexico, the new patient care dental clinic of TCDM, continues to deepen its roots in the community. Through active outreach, TCDM’s third- and fourth-year dental students along with faculty are introducing the Albuquerque clinical facility to thousands of residents, positioning it as a trusted, affordable, and accessible resource for high-quality oral health care. Educating the public on healthy smiles and the importance of oral health care remains a deeply rewarding mission for the entire team.

NYMC Ranks at 2026 Westchester Heart Walk
Although a blustery nor’easter postponed the American Heart Association Westchester County Heart Walk on September 26, NYMC still shined. On the fundraising front, Bonnie Gurran-Heindl, M.B.A., chief budget officer, ranked in the top five walkers out of 300 walkers, the Go Red with Stef team led by Stefania C. Bonanni, director of academic administration and designated school official in the SHSP, ranked in the top five teams, and NYMC earned a spot in the top five companies.

Edward C. Halperin M.D., M.A., chancellor and CEO, has been appointed to the William Osler Medal Award Committee of the American Association for the History of Medicine. The William Osler Medal is awarded annually for the best-unpublished essay on a medical historical topic written by a student enrolled in a school of medicine or osteopathy in the United States or Canada. First awarded in 1942, the medal commemorates Sir William Osler, who stimulated an interest in the humanities among medical students and physicians.

Vikas Grover, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, professor and chief of the Division of Speech-Language Pathology, has been invited to serve on the Academic Affairs Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) from 2027 to 2029. He will contribute to national conversations and initiatives that shape academic programs, strengthen professional preparation, and help address critical workforce needs in audiology and speech-language pathology.

Mark Hurwitz, M.D., left, professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Medicine, and Nikol Mladkova, M.D., Ph.D., right, assistant professor of radiation medicine, gave oral presentations at the 2026 ASTRO Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, on September 26-30. Dr. Hurwitz presented "The Role of Docetaxel in Addition to Salvage Radiation and Androgen Deprivation in Men with High-Risk Prostate Cancer Post-Prostatectomy: Results of NRG GU002," and moderated the Quick Pitch session, "Treatment Strategies in Localized and Advanced Prostate Cancer." Dr. Mladkova presented "Extrachromosomal and Complex Amplicons are Independent Prognostic Markers in Pediatric Medulloblastoma," "A Comparative Evaluation of Treatment Management Recommendations for Gynecologic Malignancies by Four Large Language Models," and "Trends in Circulatory Comorbidity among Young Americans Dying of Malignant Neoplasms: A National Population-Based Analysis, 2018-2024."

Robin Saide, M.S.W., LCSW-R, right, associate vice chancellor of student mental health and wellness and assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, was a panelist at the Thrive Together Executive Forum in partnership with Timleycare on September 30, at The Opus Westchester. She spoke on the panels, “From Reactive to Proactive: Rethinking Student Success at Scale” and “Leading Institutional Change: What It Takes to Improve Retention at Scale.” The forum brought together mental health leaders in higher education to discuss strategies for supporting student success and advancing institutional change.
