Alexander Family M Foundation Medical Education Center Plaza to honor and remember women, men, and families affected by breast cancer and help rally support for NYMC's groundbreaking research.

Summer Research Fellowships Empower Medical Students to Explore, Innovate, and Lead
Every summer, more than 100 second-year medical students engage in research fellowships, working under faculty mentorship to investigate diverse topics across a wide range of specialties for six weeks. This year was no different, as students contributed to numerous innovative research projects.

International Symposium on Adolescent and Young Adult NHL Has Far Reach
Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., front row left, professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, chaired the 8th International Symposium on Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) in New York City, September 26 – 28. The symposium presented the latest scientific and clinical advances in childhood, adolescent, and young adult NHL, NHL biopathology, NHL genomics, stem cell transplantation, immunobiology, imaging, late effects and survivorship, treatment and prognosis, and was coordinated by NYMC and the Children's Cancer Fund. The most updated clinical, translational, and basic research in this field was presented by more than 50 international faculty with more than 215 attendees present and 105 abstract presentations representing more than 25 countries. “The impressive scientific presentations were both transformative and promoted international collaboration within five continents,” said Dr. Cairo who received the Angelo Rosolen, M.D., Award, and presented the Angelo Rosolen, M.D., Memorial Lecture, “Chemoradiotherapy Free Treatment of Pediatric Mature B Cell Lymphoma: Can We Achieve This in the Near Future?”

SOM Welcomes New Faculty
New SOM faculty had the opportunity to mingle with Neil Schluger, M.D., center, SOM dean and professor of medicine, and administrators, while enjoying refreshments, during a special welcome reception on September 30 in the Alumni House hosted by the Office of Faculty and Academic Affairs. During a brief presentation, Dr. Schluger spoke about the history of the College and the benefits of a faculty appointment, which include access to NYMC’s Philip Capozzi, M.D., Library, an NYMC email, and professional development opportunities.

Partnering with Paws Crossed Animal Rescue, the event gave the NYMC community the opportunity to unwind and recharge by connecting with puppies Kismet and Jennifer.

College Joins Forces at Westchester Heart Walk to Fight Heart Disease and Stroke
NYMC made a powerful impact at the Westchester Heart Walk on September 27, finishing fourth out of 30 companies and raising more than $6,000 for the American Heart Association. The College also ranked first in companies for the Move More Challenge. Among 427 participants, Stefania Bonanni, left, director of operational support and designated school official for the SHSP, ranked second in fundraising and Bonnie Gurran-Heindl, second from left, chief budget officer, ranked first in the Move More Challenge teams and walkers. Physical therapy students were an essential part of the day, offering blood pressure checks, leading warm-ups, and cheering on walkers. This marks another successful year of supporting the fight against heart disease and stroke.

SHSP Students and Faculty Partner with the White Plains Youth Bureau for Community Health and Wellness Day
Students from the public health and speech-language pathology programs participated with Amy Ansehl, M.S.N., D.N.P., RN, FNP-BC, fourth from left, senior associate dean for student experience for SHSP, associate professor of public health, and director of applied practice experience and of community outreach and education for the Children's Environmental Health Center of the Hudson Valley; Vikas Grover, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, and chief and professor in the Division of Speech-Language Pathology, and Stefanie Blanco, M.S. '10, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, TSSLD, ATP, director of clinical education of speech-language pathology and associate professor of speech-language pathology, and the White Plains Youth Bureau in a health and wellness day in White Plains on September 20. Nearly 100 community members attended the event, where residents received valuable resources, including New York State “Prescriptions for Prevention” materials and asthma education.

Christopher Whitehurst, Ph.D., Cracks the Code of EBV
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is ubiquitous. A human tumor virus of the Herpesviridae family, EBV infects more than 90 percent of the world's population. While generally asymptomatic, it can have serious consequences if reactivated—a challenge that Christopher Whitehurst, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology and of biochemistry and molecular biology, is addressing through his research.
