Intranasal Immunization Offers Stronger Protection Against COVID-19


Immunizations delivered intranasally were found to offer stronger and more durable protection against pulmonary infectious diseases, including COVID-19, in a new study published in Frontiers of Microbiology that was conducted by Chandra Shekhar Bakshi, D.V.M., Ph.D., professor of pathology, microbiology and immunology; Alan Kadish, M.D., president of NYMC and TU and professor of medicine; and Salomon Amar, Ph.D., D.D.S., vice president of research at NYMC, senior vice president for biomedical research at TU and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology—in collaboration with researchers from Lovelace Research Institute in New Mexico. Campus Playground Gets a Makeover


For more than 25 years, the Blanche and Albert Willner Playground in the student housing complex has been a source of enjoyment for children residing on campus. That enjoyment continues today thanks to the hard work and resourcefulness of Student Housing Superintendent Visar Zeka and his team, who recently refurbished the playground. SOM Student Publishes Research Conducted In Prestigious Fellowship Program


During the summer following her first year at NYMC, Haddijatou Jallow, SOM Class of 2024, was selected to participate in the highly competitive Mayo Clinic Summer Research Fellowship Program. Jallow’s research that she conducted that summer on cardiac rehabilitation was recently published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and she presented the study at the American College of Cardiology Conference. NYMC and TU Hosts “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web”


NYMC and TU faculty experts presented on popular topics in medicine at the webinar, “Ninety Minutes: The Medical Magazine of the Web,” on September 7. The event, hosted by Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer of NYMC, was followed by a Q&A session moderated by Alan Kadish, M.D., president of NYMC and TU. Tami Hendriksz, D.O., FACOP, FAAP, dean, chief academic officer and professor of pediatrics at TU California College of Osteopathic Medicine, discussed the risks of concussions in school football. Marisa A. Montecalvo, M.D., professor of medicine and director of health services, provided an update on the current options and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine and COVID-19 variants. Daniel Zelazny, M.D., clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery, presented on rotator cuff injuries. Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., FAAN, FAES, vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion, associate dean for student affairs, associate professor of neurology and medicine, and Karen M. Murray, M.D. ’99, SOM  dean for admissions and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology, led a panel discussion on allegations of racial disparities in health outcomes. View the medical magazine webinar.

Calling Artists For The Asprinio Fitness Center Wall Project


The Dr. Edward F. and Mrs. Anna M. Asprinio Fitness Center at 19 Skyline Drive will be undergoing improvements over the coming months. As part of the process, students are invited to submit their photos or artwork of the NYMC campus to be displayed on the walls. The artwork will be presented on a rotating basis, depicting the campus through the four seasons. Sign up to be a part of the project.
