SHSP Inks Agreement with Catholic Health System of Long Island for Clinical Ethics Instruction
The Medical Ethics Program is expanding its impact with a newly signed agreement with the Catholic Health System of Long Island to provide clinical ethics instruction for the health system that operates six acute-care hospitals, three nursing homes, a home nursing service, hospice and a network of physician practices with nearly 17,400 employees. The training will be provided to members of the Ethics Committees of the Catholic Health facilities, to help them identify, analyze, facilitate and resolve, ethical conflicts in the context of their institution. NYMC Marks World Field Epidemiology Day
September 7, 2021, marked the first year of World Field Epidemiology Day to highlight the importance of epidemiologists amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Elizabeth D. Drugge, Ph.D., M.P.H. '12, assistant professor of epidemiology and adjunct professor of pharmacology, became an epidemiologist long before the term became commonplace amongst the media and the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. NYMC Issues Updated Policy on the Development, Issuance and Maintenance of Policies
NYMC has issued an updated Policy on the Development, Issuance and Maintenance of Policies to provide a standardized process for the development, issuance and updates of all College policies. The revision assures consistency, compliance with law, communication with the College community and effective updating, as well as clarifies the workflow and responsibility for policy creation and review. A comprehensive review and update of all College policies will take place over the next several months and policies will be reviewed biannually thereafter.

Quill and Scope is Online
The latest edition of Quill and Scope, Volume XIII: The Labrinth, is available online. The medical student journal was founded in 2008 to provide a platform for medical students to express their views on the contemporary issues in medicine and find balance in the life of a medical student. Diversity and breadth of scope are core values of the journal, as is integrity and professionalism. This year's edition represents all the twists, turns and challenges, presented by the COVID-19 pandemic and inspires to present a space for rest, reflection and creation. All forms of art and literature are considered for publication including commentaries, reviews, research abstracts, poetry, artwork and photography.

Nicholas R. Ferreri, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology and course director for immunopharmacology and molecular pharmacology, received a four-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) totaling $1,640,000 for "Regulation of NKCC2 Isoforms and Blood Pressure by Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha."

George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, EMPT, assistant director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health, was the invited keynote speaker for an online symposium on August 26, hosted by the University of Technology of Ecuador (UTE) based in Quito, Ecuador. His presentation, "The important role of emergency medical services and disaster medicine during natural disasters, public health emergencies and terrorist attacks," focused on how the New York area has dealt with various types of public health emergencies and natural disasters in recent decades.

Fernando P. Bruno, M.D., M.P.H., adjunct associate professor of public health in the Division of Epidemiology, was awarded an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (STPF). He will work with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), with placement in the Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science (CTRIS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Bruno is among 284 highly trained scientists and engineers who will spend a year serving professionally in federal agencies and congressional offices as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow. The program aims to support evidence-based policymaking by leveraging the knowledge and analytical mindset of science and engineering experts, and foster leaders for a strong U.S. science and technology enterprise. Dr. Bruno will work on health and science policy to identify the best strategies for ensuring successful integration of evidence-based interventions within clinical and public health setting.

The seasonal flu vaccine is now available at NYMC. The Family Health Center has the regular vaccine dose and the high dose for seniors. A two-year WSJ subscription was purchased with funding from the Sidney E. Frank Foundation with support from Joseph T. English, M.D., the Sidney E.
