NYMC Remembers 9/11
On the 25th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, NYMC commemorated the occasion with a tree planting outside of the Basic Sciences Building and a plaque with the inscription, “In honor and loving memory of those killed on 9/11/2001. Never forget. A gift from the NYMC School of Medicine Class of 2005.” The suggestion for the tree planting came from Lt. Col. Debjeet Sarkar, M.D. ’05, right, who donated the tree on behalf of his classmates who were first-year medical students at the time. He returned to campus for the dedication and reminisced with William H. Frishman, M.D., left, professor of medicine and pharmacology, and chair emeritus of the Department of Medicine, who reflected on the day spent consoling students and assuring them everything would be alright. Dr. Sarkar, a U.S. Army combat veteran, an emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, and chief executive officer and founder of Operation Restore Decency, a nonprofit focused on health care and education resources for rural America, veterans and migrant workers, recalled the sense of community throughout NYMC and how everyone supported each other and tried to help including trying to get down to Ground Zero, donating blood and collecting supplies. Be sure to visit the 9/11 exhibit on display through the end of the year in the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library.

NYMC Goes Gold for Childhood Cancer
On September 10, NYMC went gold in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The NYMC community joined Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., front center, professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell and molecular physiology, and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, for a group photo honoring and remembering children and families affected by cancer while rallying support for groundbreaking research.

Julie Di Martino, Ph.D., Awarded Susan G. Komen Career Catalyst Research Grant
Julie Di Martino, Ph.D., assistant professor of cell and molecular physiology, is one of just six recipients worldwide of a 2026 Susan G. Komen Career Catalyst Research Grant to advance her research into breast cancer dormancy. The $442,502 grant will be dedicated to studying the earliest steps that allow breast cancer cells to survive, remain hidden, and later grow again.

Emerging Scientists Tackle Tick-Borne Disease Research
This summer, Dana Mordue, Ph.D., vice chancellor for accreditation and student support and associate professor of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, opened up her lab again and mentored a group of undergraduate and high school students researching two of the Northeast’s most common tick-borne diseases.

CDM Achieves CAPCE Organizational Reaccreditation
The Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM) has received Organizational Reaccreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE). It is one of the few selected nationally for this organizational accreditation which confirms the continuing education program continues to meet rigorous standards for quality and effectiveness. “Most importantly, reaccreditation reflects our organization’s ongoing commitment to continuous assessment and improvement, ensuring EMS clinicians receive optimal learning experiences that prepare them for the challenges of their profession,” said David S. Markenson, M.D., M.B.A., Dr.P.H. ’25, director of the CDM.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15, NYMC remembers alumni Carmen Castro Suarez, M.D. ’49, left, and Marisa Castro, M.D. ’49, right, two sisters from San Juan, Puerto Rico. On June 8, 1949, they graduated together from NYMC, marking a historic milestone not only for their family but for Latin representation in medicine. The sisters returned to Puerto Rico for their internships: Dr. Marisa Castro at Arecibo District Hospital and Dr. Carmen Castro Suarez at Municipal City Hospital in San Juan alongside her husband and fellow College alumnus José F. Suárez, M.D. ’49. Throughout their careers, the Castro sisters remained committed to public service and community care.
