M1 Students and Alumni Connect at Networking Soiree

SOM first-year students mixed, mingled, and made connections at the Alumni Networking Soiree on September 8 at Sleepy Hollow Hotel. Hosted by the NYMC Board of Advisors, Alumni Council, and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, the evening brought together students and alumni to share stories, explore specialties, and spark mentorship opportunities that will last well beyond the night.

Free Campus Food Pantries Available to Support Students

September is Hunger Action Month. To support those facing food insecurity, students have access to two free food pantries on campus. In Sunshine Cottage Room 145, the Office of Campus Engagement offers a pantry stocked with nonperishable food items donated by Calvary Baptist Church in White Plains, New York, with contributions welcome from the entire campus community. The micro pantry outside the Alumni House provides nonperishable goods donated by the NYMC community, with contributions accepted in the Alumni House kitchen or directly in the pantry. Please note that the pantries are not supervised for Jewish dietary law observance.

IN THE COMMUNITY

NYMC Community Rallies Together at Donate Life Club Blood Drive

The Donate Life Club’s August 26 blood drive at NYMC was a success—32 pints of blood were donated, each one representing hope and healing for individuals in medical crisis. "As a co-president of the Donate for life club, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who came out to donate blood," said Annette Lopane, SOM Class of 2028. "A single blood donation could mean the difference of someone's life and it is one of the few ways you can give back to your community without spending any money. Donating blood takes less than an hour of your time and could save someone's life, so donate blood if you are able to."

SIGN Walks for Epilepsy

The Student Interest Group in Neurology organized a team for the Walk for Epilepsy across the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, New York, on September 7 with students and faculty. A beautiful day to support an important cause.

TIP OF THE WEEK

From the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library: Access to JSTOR, a text and image database that supports research and teaching in the humanities and sciences, is available. This robust platform allows you to explore millions of high-quality journal articles, books, primary sources, and images across more than 2,000 collections, including artworks, maps, and photographs. You can find JSTOR on the library’s database page. This resource was purchased as part of a consortial agreement with the Touro Libraries.

The SOM Office of Student Affairs welcomed Vincent DiBenigno, center, and his daughter, Julia DiBenigno, right, to the NYMC campus on August 28, a bright and beautiful day. Their visit was more than a campus stroll—it was a heartfelt tribute to Vincent’s mother, Maria D’Ostilio DiBenigno. In the early 1950s, Maria D’Ostilio DiBenigno was quarantined at Munger Pavilion after tuberculosis exposure, separated from her family and her one-and-a-half-year-old son, Vincent DiBenigno. Though never diagnosed, she spent months there, where the only prescribed treatments were fresh air, sunshine, and rest. Munger Pavilion, named after Claude W. Munger, M.D., once served as a tuberculosis facility for adults, while Sunshine Cottage cared for children. To honor her grandmother’s memory, Julia DiBenigno reached out to Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and CEO, and Jane Ponterio, M.D. ’81, left, SOM dean of students and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Ponterio guided the DiBenignos across campus, including a stop at Sunshine Cottage, connecting the family’s personal history with the institution’s public health legacy. Their visit reminds us that behind every milestone in medical progress are deeply human stories that continue to resonate on our campus today.
