Women in Medicine Book Discussion What We Bring to the Practice of Medicine: Perspectives from Women Physicians

In celebration of Women in Medicine Month, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted a book signing and discussion in collaboration with NYMC affinity groups Women in Medicine and the American Medical Women’s Association for the newly released book, “What We Bring to the Practice of Medicine: Perspectives from Women Physicians” by Kimberly Greene-Liebowitz, M.D., M.P.H., second from right, and her collaborating authors Rachel Kowalsky, M.D., M.P.H., third from left, and Dana Corriel, M.D., third from right. The book is a collection of 40 essays authored by female physicians across various specialties. They were joined by Mill Etienne, M.D. ’02, M.P.H., left, vice chancellor of diversity and inclusion, associate dean of SOM student affairs and associate professor of neurology and of medicine; Lori Weir Solomon, M.D. ’99, M.P.H. ’09, second from left, chair and clinical associate professor of family and community medicine and director of the Family Health Center; and Wianda Jean, M.S., right, assistant to the vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion.

NYMC is honored to present its 2023 Founder's Dinner on Wednesday, October 25 at Marina Del Ray in the Bronx, New York, honoring Matthew A. Pravetz, O.F.M., Ph.D. '88, professor emeritus of cell biology and anatomy, and Alan B. Rosenthal, D.M.D., adjunct assistant clinical professor of dental medicine and trustee at NYMC, and assistant dean on community outreach and global health at TU, with Distinguished and Service Leadership Awards. Proceeds go towards scholarships and important initiatives, and furthers NYMC’s mission to educate the next generation of physicians and health care providers, and support life-saving biomedical research. Robin Hershkowitz, M.S.W., LCSW-R, senior director of the Office of Student Mental Health and Wellness and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, highlights the wide-range of services the Office has to offer and new developments for the school year. Felipe C. Cabello, M.D., professor emeritus of pathology, microbiology, and immunology, right, and Stuart A. Newman, Ph.D., professor of cell biology and anatomy, left, were faculty of the online 2023 Summer School on “Biology and Society,” August 8 - 12, organized by the International Philosophy of Biology Circle. Dr. Cabello lectured on “What is public health?” and “Epidemics in history and in culture: some examples.” Dr. Newman lectured on “A brief history of corporate capture of the biosphere” and “Scientific and social contraindications of human genetic engineering,” and along with the philosopher and ecologist Sahotra Sarkar, Ph.D., presented an introductory lecture to the school titled “Gould, Levins, Lewontin – the context.” The summer school drew students from five continents.
