NYMC and TU Host Successful Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference
More than 500 attendees joined the Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Biomedical Space Conference on September 15, where the audience heard from leaders in biotechnology and biomedical research. After. the impressive presentations, Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., senior vice president for research affairs, TU, vice president for research at NYMC, who organized the conference, said "If we take the lessons that we've learned we can chart a better future for humanity." School of Medicine Launches New Medical Education Curriculum
The SOM Class of 2026 will be the first class to experience the new medical education curriculum launched this year at NYMC. The new curriculum, which was developed by a broad representation of SOM administration, faculty and students, integrates basic science and clinical course content during the first eighteen months of medical education, while also allowing students to enter clerkships much earlier in their education. The Inaugural Dr. Melvin H. Amler Prize for Innovation to be Announced
Jonathan V. Pascale, a fifth-year Ph.D. student, was named the inaugural recipient of the Melvin H. Amler Prize for Innovation for his research illuminating the importance of the vasoactive eicosanoid, 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) and its receptor GPR75 at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Biomedical Space Conference, on September 15. 20-HETE and its receptor are implicated across a variety of pathologies including cancer, hypertension, diabetes and most recently, obesity. The award was established in honor of the late Melvin H. Amler, M.S., D.D.S., a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded biomedical researcher and practicing dentist whose creativity inspired his students and colleagues for more than six decades. Annual Club Fair Boasts Record Number of Student Organizations
The MEC and BSB were bustling on September 15 as hundreds of NYMC students attended the annual Club Fair to learn more about the more than 100 student organizations represented. NYMC Goes Gold for Childhood Cancer
To recognize Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the NYMC community came together and wore gold to raise awareness of the thousands of children who fight cancer and the work done by faculty like Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell biology and anatomy, to research potential treatment options.

Rajkumar Pammal, SOM Class of 2023, Hopes to Be an Agent of Change in Emergency Medicine
Rajkumar Pammal, SOM Class of 2023 and president of the SOM Student Senate, doesn’t take the role of a physician in a patient’s life lightly. While pursuing his M.D., Mr. Pammal has made it a priority to not only learn the science behind medicine, but to embrace humanism when beginning to treat patients. While embracing compassion in his clinical studies, Mr. Pammal has his sights set on a career in emergency medicine. Read the full Q&A with Mr. Pammal.

Kristina Petersen, Ph.D., assistant dean of academic support programs and associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, was a guest speaker at the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Student Affairs Professional Development Initiative Community Call on September 16.

As recorded in the Congressional Record, Shetal Shah, M.D., professor of pediatrics, was commended by U.S. Representative Thomas R. Suozzi, of New York’s Third District, on June 23, and U.S. Representative Kathleen Rice, of New York's Fourth Congressional District, on September 9 for his advocacy on behalf of New York’s children and his commitment to public health. He was recognized for his work to increase funding for childhood vaccinations and children’s hospitals, helping increase access to Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and his efforts to encourage medical school graduates to pursue careers in pediatrics and pediatric subspecialties in underserved communities. Dr. Shah was also recognized for his role in promoting public health throughout the COVID–19 pandemic by hand-delivering protective equipment to pediatricians across Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk counties, providing timely updates COVID-19 protocols to more than 1,500 pediatricians throughout Long Island and allaying fears about the COVID-19 vaccine.
