MFCH Named in Top 50 Best Children's Hospitals for Cancer
For the second consecutive year, NYMC’s major clinical affiliate, Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, was ranked in the Top 50 Best Children's Hospitals for Cancer for 2026-2027 by U.S. News & World Report. It was also named a Best Regional Hospital and is ranked fifth in New York and sixteenth in the Mid-Atlantic Region. “This is a coveted honor and is testament to all of our exemplary multidisciplinary contributions, collaborations and commitment to the quality, depth and breadth of our program,” commented Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell and molecular physiology, and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Students Gain Early Research Experience in the Quest to Combat Obesity and Cardiometabolic Disease
High school and college students gained hands-on experience in biomedical research in the laboratory of Victor G. Garcia, Ph.D. '15, associate professor of pharmacology. Through their work in the lab, the students explored the role of GPR75 and 20-HETE in obesity and obesity-associated complications such as diabetes and liver disease.

Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology, was a co-chair and speaker at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute 15th Anniversary National Workshop on Infection, Immunity, and Inflammation (3Is) and Cardiovascular Disease on September 16-17. The workshop revisited the evolving science of infection, immunity, and inflammation in cardiovascular disease and looked ahead to opportunities for translating mechanistic discovery into clinical and public health impact. Dr. Amar chaired the panel, Infection and CVD—Emerging Mechanisms and Research Priorities, and moderated the panel discussion, The Path Forward.

Mitchell S. Cairo, M.D., professor of pediatrics, medicine, pathology, microbiology and immunology, and cell and molecular physiology, and vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics, gave an oral presentation at the Society International Oncology Pediatrics (SIOP) in San Antonio, Texas, on September 18. He presented “A Single Arm, Open Label, Phase 1B Trial of Epcoritamab in Pediatric Patients With R/R Mature B-Cell Neoplasms,” sharing the final results of an international study involving the U.S., Canada, Japan, Australia, Israel, Turkey, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany, of a first in child study of a Bispecific T Cell Engager (BITE) called Epcoritamab in children with relapsed/refractory Mature B-Cell Lymphoma.

In honor of World Alzheimer's Day on September 21, NYMC recognizes alumna and faculty member, Nancy Stambler, Dr.P.H.’11, adjunct assistant professor of public health. Dr. Stambler is vice president of data science at Lantheus and was the lead biostatistician and lead of the FDA response team for the recently FDA-approved TAUKLARIFY™, a new radiodiagnostic agent used with a PET scan that can help physicians detect tau buildup in the brains of adults being evaluated for Alzheimer’s disease.
