Major Clinical Affiliate Metropolitan Celebrates 150 Years
It was a momentous evening on September 18, as NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan marked an extraordinary milestone—150 years of service to the people of New York—at a black-tie gala at Guastavino’s in New York City. The celebration honored Metropolitan’s legacy as one of the city’s most vital safety-net hospitals and highlighted its deep historic partnership with NYMC, the longest-running uninterrupted affiliation between a medical school and a municipal hospital in the United States. Among the evening’s honorees were Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, Hussein Matari, M.D., professor of radiology, and Marc K. Wallack, M.D., professor of surgery. "Metropolitan and New York Medical College are dedicated to the discovery, protection and dissemination of truth," said Dr. Halperin of the institutions' legacies of caring for all patients. "We are jointly dedicated to equality and consideration."

Dr. Okeoma Unlocks Hidden Clues for Potential HIV Treatment
While semen is a common transmission route for HIV through sexual contact, it may hold the key to new treatments. Semen contains tiny particles called extracellular vesicles, which act like messengers that carry signals between cells and influence how those cells behave. These vesicles may contain HIV-suppressing molecules, which can block the virus by interfering with the virus’s ability to make copies of itself within the body, according to a new study in Science Signaling by Chioma M. Okeoma, Ph.D., professor and vice chair of research in the Department of pathology, microbiology and immunology.

New Area of Concentration in Health Systems Management Launched
The SOM has expanded its Areas of Concentration (AOC) to include a new AOC in Health Systems Management, offered in collaboration with Westchester Medical Center (WMC). "With the decline of private practice, physicians will be working in settings that they neither own nor control. Our graduates need the ability to work synergistically with non-physician professionals," says Richard Rohr, M.D. ’80, clinical assistant professor of medicine and member of the NYMC Board of Advisors, who co-developed the AOC as an extension of his work in the Health Systems Sciences program. The AOC will give students interested in future leadership roles an opportunity to work with the administrative staff at WMC to gain exposure to strategic planning, marketing, communications, government and community relations, and research administration, under the direction of Joshua Ratner, executive vice president, chief strategy and business development officer at WMC. Students will compare and contrast the approach to marketing and strategy at WMC with what they encounter at other hospitals in their clinical rotations and develop an approach to combining their talents with those of nonphysician professionals to achieve success in their future careers.
