NYMC Celebrated at Doctors of Distinction 2023


Westchester’s esteemed health care professionals eagerly came together for the annual Doctors of Distinction award ceremony to honor the heroes of the county and connect, exchange knowledge and foster collaborations within the industry. Adam D. Hammerman, M.B.A., vice president and chief financial officer, was the  keynote speaker on September 21 at the VIP Country Club in New Rochelle, New York. Fawaz Al-Mufti, M.D., associate professor of neurology, neurosurgery and radiology, was honored with the Doctor without Boundaries Award; Thomas Gagliardi, SOM Class of 2024, earned the Promise for the Future Award; and Naida Henriquez, D.M.D., instructor of dental medicine, was presented the Dentist Award.

Founder's Dinner 2023


NYMC is honored to present its 2023 Founder's Dinner on Wednesday, October 25 at Marina Del Rey in the Bronx, New York, honoring Matthew A. Pravetz, O.F.M., Ph.D. '88, professor emeritus of cell biology and anatomy, and Alan B. Rosenthal, D.M.D., adjunct assistant clinical professor of dental medicine and trustee at NYMC, and assistant dean on community outreach and global health at TU, with Distinguished and Service Leadership Awards. Proceeds go towards scholarships and important initiatives, and furthers NYMC’s mission to educate the next generation of physicians and health care providers, and support life-saving biomedical research. ACCOLADES

Tracey Milligan, M.D., FANA, professor and chair of neurology, received the Distinguished Neurology Teacher Award at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Neurologic Association. This award recognizes the contributions by gifted and talented teachers of neurology. Nominees come from the entire field of clinical neurology or neuroscience.

Ashley Chory, a Dr.P.H. candidate, presented at two international conferences this summer in Brisbane, Australia. Her poster, “The role of researcher-participant relationships and trust in children and adolescents living with HIV participating in research” was presented at both the International AIDS Society Annual Meeting and the International Workshop on HIV and Pediatrics. She was a co-author on two other posters presented at both conferences as well: “Consenting and re-consenting Kenyan children and adolescents living with HIV in research involving biological sampling and bio-banking” and “Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), drug resistance, and their impact on evolving viral suppression among a long-term cohort of youth living with perinatal HIV infection in western Kenya.” These abstracts describe work conducted within the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare in western Kenya.

September is National Preparedness Month. The Center for Disaster Medicine recommends every household has a Basic Disaster Supply Kit:


  • Water – one gallon per person per day for several days
  • Food – non-perishable for several days
  • Battery-powered/hand-crank NOAA Weather Radio
  • Flashlight
  • First Aid Kit including tourniquets, wound packing and chest seals
  • Batteries
  • Whistle
  • Dust mask(s)
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Can Opener
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with batteries and chargers


Additional Supplies

  • Soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes
  • Prescription medications
  • Non-prescription medications – pain relief, anti-diarrhea, etc.
  • Prescription eyeglasses, contacts and contact solution
  • Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes
  • Pet food and extra water
  • Cash or traveler’s checks
  • Family documents including insurance and banking information
  • Sleeping bag/warm blanket for every person
  • Complete change of clothing for every person
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Matches (kept in a dry container)
  • Feminine supplies and feminine hygiene products
  • Mess kits (disposable utensils, dinnerware, paper towels)
  • Paper and pencil
  • Books, games, and other activities for children

Keynote speaker Philip Kuehl, Ph.D., director of Scientific Core Laboratories at Lovelace Biomedical, will highlight the key aspects of inhalation drug delivery as programs transition from early pharmacology all the way to IND-enabling studies. It will detail the delivery systems utilized, the study designs that are most efficient and the key end points. Register for the event.
