Industry Leaders to Present at Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference Set for September 15

As part of the series of celebrations in honor of Touro University’s (TU) 50th anniversary, NYMC and TU will host a special conference, “Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Biomedical Space” on Thursday, September 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The conference will take place virtually and in person at 7 Dana Road. A stellar lineup of speakers including renowned leaders from NYMC, TU, the McLaughlin Research Institute, Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals will discuss innovation in health care, life sciences entrepreneurship, research institutes, clinical approaches, medical education and academic approaches. Read more about the conference and register.

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., is Named the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

Esther L. Sabban, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry and molecular biology and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has been appointed the Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The Sidney E. Frank Distinguished Professorship was established in 2005 with a $5 million endowment to support a variety of educational programs and research aimed at understanding what triggers certain forms of psychiatric illness, including medical conditions, depression and stress related to trauma, disaster or terrorism. Purchasing Office Helps Close Links in Supply Chain

Disruptions in the global supply chain as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have become all too familiar. From computer chips to baby formula and countless items in between, not to mention shipping delays and backlogs, individuals and organizations have had to get creative and do their best to forecast their needs and plan their purchases. Maribel Giraldo, M.S., director of procurement services, shares how NYMC is dealing with supply chain issues.

Race for Rehab Set for October 2

On your mark: The Race for Rehab is back in person this year after two years of virtual running. The 24th Annual Race for Rehab, sponsored by the D.P.T. Class of 2024, is set for Sunday, October 2, at 10:00 a.m., on the Valhalla campus. The 5K race will benefit Achilles International, an organization dedicated to providing athletes with disabilities a supportive community to train and race with 65 chapters in the United States and 70 chapters abroad. A pre-race warm up will be led by D.P.T. students and an awards ceremony and prize drawings will take place after the race. Sponsorship information and registration is available online.

NYMC and TU Host 21st COVID-19 Symposium

NYMC and TU leadership hosted the 21st COVID-19 Symposium on August 23. The webinar covered a host of topics including designing vaccines to keep up with virus mutations; the new Novavax vaccine; the history of vaccines and vaccinology; prescriptions for Nirmatelvir/Ritnovir (Paxlovid), Molnupiravir (Lagevrio) and monoclonal antibodies; and sending children back to school in the fall. The Center for Disaster Medicine is an Essential Resource for Emergency Response Education

The Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM) at NYMC has been training and educating law enforcement and health care professionals in emergency response techniques for nearly two decades. CDM leadership, including David S. Markenson, M.D., M.B.A., director of the CDM, and assistant directors George W. Contreras, M.E.P., M.P.H., M.S., CEM, FACEM, assistant professor in the Institute of Public Health of the SHSP and Kevin L. Pohlman, M.Ed., assistant professor in the Institute for Public Health in the SHSP, take a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to the various trainings they provide ranging from emergency preparedness to public health emergencies. Donate Life Club Has Near Record Turnout in First Blood Drive of 2022-2023 Academic Year

The Donate Life Club at NYMC started the academic year strong with a big turnout for their first blood drive of the year on August 18, already achieving one quarter of the last year’s record-breaking amount of donations. The drive was done in collaboration with the New York Blood Center and local breweries called “Pint for a Pint,” where blood donors receive a voucher for a free beverage at a later date.
