By the time Spiros Doupis, center, accepted a summer research position in the lab of Marcello Rota, Ph.D., left, vice chair and associate professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Physiology, he had sent hundreds of emails to scientists seeking an opportunity. Aspiring to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, Doupis found the hands-on laboratory experience to be an important foundation for his future career in medicine.

NYMC Club Fair 2026 Highlights Student Involvement and Inclusion

New Puzzle Room Offers Recreation and Relaxation
A new gathering spot has made its debut in the Basic Sciences Café. Aunt Jennifer and Uncle Edward’s Puzzle Room invites the community to step away from their daily routines and enjoy a few moments of creativity, collaboration, and friendly challenge. The Puzzle Room features a collection generously donated by Jennifer Halperin, daughter of Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, and an executive with the toy company Crocodile Creek.

The Office of the Chancellor, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and the Phillip Capozzi, M.D., Library are hosting the 33rd Annual Faculty Author Celebration and Awards to honor the scholarly achievements and contributions of NYMC faculty authors. The celebration will take place on Thursday, October 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30pm, in Doc’s Cafe in the Basic Sciences Building.

Real Life Experiences Prepare Students for TCDM
The newest class at TCDM, the Class of 2030, includes students from a range of academic and personal backgrounds, including graduates of Yale University, the University at Buffalo, Brooklyn College, the College of Staten Island and Touro’s New York School of Career and Applied Studies. They arrived with experience in dental offices, engineering courses, and community health settings, and with different ideas about the kind of work they may eventually pursue.

Lifesaving Skills in Action
On August 3, 2026, Thomas McAdam, M.P.H., educator and accreditation manager in the Center for Disaster Medicine who is also an EMT, was enjoying a workout at the Life Time Fitness Gym in West Harrison, New York, when a male gym patron went into cardiac arrest. McAdam and two other men performed CPR until EMS arrived. Prior to the arrival of EMS, Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC) was achieved through CPR and two AED shocks. “The patient is alive and well. This absolutely highlights the importance of maintaining situational awareness and scene management during times of emergencies as well as being trained in CPR and the use of AEDs,” said McAdam.

SHY Therapeutics Enters Phase 1 Clinical Trial Testing
BioInc@NYMC client SHY Therapeutics has reached an important milestone in the development of a potential new cancer treatment, SHY-ONC6. The first patient has been treated in Luca-1, a Phase 1 clinical trial evaluating the investigational oral drug in people with advanced solid tumors. SHY-ONC6 takes a different approach to disrupting the cellular process that helps cancer cells manage and remove damaged proteins. While currently approved drugs that target this process are primarily used to treat certain blood cancers, SHY-ONC6 is being studied for its potential to treat solid tumors. The Phase 1 trial will evaluate the drug’s safety, tolerability, and how the body processes it, while also assessing early signs of anti-tumor activity. Initial results are expected in 2027. “This milestone is an exciting step forward for SHY Therapeutics and an important example of how research can move from the laboratory toward potential new treatments for patients. We are proud to support SHY Therapeutics as a BioInc@NYMC client and look forward to seeing what the Luca-1 trial reveals,” said Salomon Amar, D.D.S., Ph.D., vice president for research and professor of pharmacology and of pathology, microbiology and immunology.
