I am excited to bring to you the first issue of the MANA newsletter – The Brief – a quarterly chronicle of MANA’s activities throughout the year. Each issue will highlight MANA’s growth in membership with nearly 1,000 members, in impact with seven active Interest Groups, and in corporate sponsorship with 11 corporate members to date. The Brief is organized by WomiX and will be led by Dr. Arpana Vaniya and Dr. Maryam Goudarzi. If you are interested in learning more about the newsletter or in volunteering to contribute content, then please reach out to Arpana (avaniya@ucdavis.edu) and Maryam (goudarm@ccf.org).

The Early Career Members Council has been busy this year serving the MANA ECM community! In February, we hosted a mixer to connect with our members and gauge the pulse of what our members missed in 2020. We also kicked off a couple of Twitter campaigns: “Career Tip Tuesdays” aims to provide useful tips from peers and senior scientists and our Monthly “ECM Spotlight” serves as a platform to promote the visibility of our ECMs and their research!
As we move into the Summer, we’ve been very busy planning for upcoming events behind the scenes! The ECM Council is organizing MANA 2021 ECM Awards, a career development workshop, and hopefully other events to facilitate our ECM professional development and networking. We are also excited to announce elections to join the ECM Council for 2022! Please be on the lookout for updates and announcements on all of our activities and developments!
If you’re not already part of the email list, please send us an email with your name, the year of the last degree, and what email address you would like to use. We can be reached at earlycareer@metabolomicsna.org.
We hope to see you all at MANA 2021!!

The MANA Software and Data Exchange (SODA) is ramping up activities! Our goal is to facilitate the sharing of experiences and best practices with existing software, as well as the collection and distribution of benchmark datasets for broader application in the computational community in metabolomics. Current activities include virtual meetings where researchers present their favorite tools, as well as a collection of links to and analysis of software, workflows, and benchmark datasets. Interested? Email us at soda@metabolomicsna.org or visit our website.

Microbiome Interest Group aims at promoting metabolomics in microbiome research and fostering communication among microbiome scientists in NA. Planning of a microbiome-focused instructional workshop at MANA2021 is underway. We invite all MANA members to participate in new microbiome initiatives on multi-omics data integration, standardization of QA/QC measures, and informatics and database creation. Please follow us on Twitter @MetabolomicsANA.

Virtual MANA Journal Club
|
|
The Virtual MANA Journal Club started in January lead by MANA Board member Prof. Art Edison. The club was organized to promote awareness and discussion of key issues in the field of metabolomics. providing opportunities to build a network with other members. In the first year, the journal club had 14 meetings with a total of 19 presentations.
|
|
The Virtual MANA Journal Club will continue this Fall with a new format where we hope to pair established scientists with early-career scientists to promote scientific dialogue among our members. This new format will allow the early-career scientists to engage with the audience and will also allow them to pair up with someone whom they view as a good mentor for public speaking.
