California Political Treasurers Association

Greetings and welcome to the Inaugural CPTA Newsletter

The purpose of this newsletter is to keep our members up to date on issues important to our mission as campaign and lobby compliance professionals.

During our recent conference in Monterey we discussed that although CPTA has nearly 100 members, most do not to attend either a quarterly meeting, even if held in their geographic area, or the annual conference. Since the value of membership is the participation and exchange of information among all members, the core membership, over thirty strong, would like to bring more value to each member to encourage participation. Thus the suggestion to publish a newsletter was widely supported.

We hope this newsletter will provide value to your membership and I welcome your constructive feedback.  And please, if there is any information you would like to share, please do not hesitate to contact Sheila Scally.  Sheila's email address is sscally@politicomlaw.com

All the Best!

Legislative Update

CPTA’s lobbyist Branche Jones keeps us informed of pending legislation of interest to our membership.  And, upon CPTA recommendation, Mr. Jones will communicate our concerns to the Legislature if any pending legislation is not in our interest.  One current bill that CPTA has expressed concern about is AB 187, authored by Assemblymember Todd Gloria. This proposed legislation will require a committee to file a report each time it makes contributions totaling $5000 or more or independent expenditures aggregating $5,000 or more in support of or opposition to a local initiative or ballot measure.  The report shall be filed within 10 business days.  Effectively, this bill requires State Committees to file an “Umberg”/State Ballot Measure report in local jurisdictions.

If you would like discuss this bill or any other legislation that is of importance to you, please contact Laura Stephen.  Laura's email address is lstephen@eichmancpa.com

Did You Know?

What's New?

Since Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez has not yet been sworn in as Xavier Becerra's  replacement in Congressional District 34 and has not yet resigned his Assembly seat in AD 51, a Special Election has not yet been called.  But be aware that once the resignation is official, the Special Election will be set.  Anticipate the election to occur sometime in August or September. Most likely the 90 Day 24 Hour Late Contribution Reporting period will commence immediately.

Do you know which CPTA member was once a rock and roll singer, brick mason, baby photographer, sous chef and LPGA golf writer prior to finding a path into non-profit accounting and political finance?

Launching her new branded identity, WEPAC LLC (formerly Warren & Associates LLC), Nancy Warren is proud to offer more than 20 years of experience providing accurate, fast-paced campaign finance services to blue-chip clients. Her firm has worked with the San Francisco Giants, Forest City, Lennar Corp., congressional clients, as well as the full range of California state and local candidates, PACs, ballot measure committees, slate cards and major donors.

Formerly the vice president of legislation for CPTA,  Nancy currently serves as Treasurer and Advocacy committee chair on the board of directors of 10,000 Degrees, a college equity and success organization that serves low-income families whose kids are striving to become first-generation college graduates.  http://www.10000degrees.org/

WEPAC will unveil a brand refresh and website relaunch the first week of August. “We are most excited about the new resources page we’ve added, and invite you to come and use this one-stop, point-and-click guide to all the major filing officers, election departments and government code sites,” she says.

The firm is also starting an innovative intern program designed to provide a job and meaningful experience for 10,000 Degree college grads and others interested in developing their political voice while gaining real-world experience behind the political scene.

On her days off you can find Nancy cycling, playing with office hound LuLu or traipsing down to the little village in Baja that she calls her second home.

For more information, contact Nancy at NWarren@WEPACCA.com or on WEPAC’s office number at 415-884-5500.
