HCC Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives is thrilled to announce the Open for Business Program designed to empower and accelerate the growth of women owned businesses. This initiative is funded through the generosity of Wells Fargo.

Open for Business utilizes the successful and creative strategies of HCC's Entrepreneurial Initiatives Department with a unique focus on Hispanic, Black,
Indo-American, and Asian women. The agenda includes business, financial and marketing programs, business plan preparation, business advising, credit counseling and connections to Houston's business eco-system.

The first series is the Open for Business - Small Business Success Series by HCC©
a five module program that is practical and takes each participant from the idea stage to potential launch!

We are delighted to introduce Open for Business Director: Tamala Austin
Tamala Austin
Tamala Austin is the imaginative founder of JIVE Juice Company, the First African American Female Juice Company of its kind to join Whole Foods Market. In July 2021, the growing health company achieved another milestone as it joined the
H-E-B Grocery Company family, enabling it to reach more clients and help them maintain healthier bodies. Austin is a businesswoman on a mission. She launched herself into the professional after graduating from Texas Southern University with a Bachelor's degree in Accounting and a Master's in Business Administration from Texas Women's University. She is the author of "Love My Body Again: 21 Days of Medication to Live Your Best Healthy Life Now." She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

In 2019 at his biennial State of the State address, Texas Governor Greg Abbott highlighted the success story of J.I.V.E. Juice founder Tamala Austin. "Inspiration, hard work and drive pay off in Texas; they paid off for Tamala," Gov. Abbott stated, citing the growth of J.I.V.E. Juice from home-based business into a retail success. "Let us thank you for your inspiration of what a business leader can be."

Tamala is recognized for her collaborative leadership style, proactive approach and keen ability to translate concepts into straightforward ideas effectively. It is her passion to share her journey to entrepreneurship, encourage a culture of learning, while inspiring others to achieve anything while fostering a culture of innovation. To bridge the gap between theory and to stay current in the industry, she coaches teams and individuals, especially women who have a desire to start a business or have an existing business. Carola Medina
Carola Medina is the new administrative support for the Open for Business team. She is a recent graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in psychology. Her personal mission has always been to work with diverse and underrepresented communities.

One of her first jobs after graduating was working as a mental health support and care for adolescents in a hospital setting. Carola's professional goals are centered around helping others achieve personal growth and giving back to her community. She is excited to be part of initiative to empower women of color to achieve their business aspirations. She hopes to bring an organized and dedicated presence to the team. Rudy Cavazos Jr. with The Bridgepath
Rodolfo (Rudy) Cavazos Jr. has three decades of experience in the Personal Finance and Credit industry. Cavazos is a Business school graduate from Texas A&M University, attended Midwestern State University, where he worked on his Master's in Political Science and completed the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) certification program at Rice University. Cavazos spent 18 years at the largest US credit counseling agency, where he directed five major markets that included Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California and Chicago. He is fluent in English and Spanish.

In 2016, Cavazos founded The BridgePath, a boutique non-profit that provides expert, comprehensive and fundamental personal financial education to both general and low to moderate income families and individuals. Leveraging years of networking and successful collaboratives, Cavazos and his team, are currently providing financial education in Texas, Louisiana, Arizona, California, Michigan and Florida. The BridgePath aims to be recognized as a leader in disseminating personal financial education by bridging resources to communities in need.
