Dear William Paterson Community,

I am thrilled to invite you all to the First Annual President’s Diversity Lecture with Dr. Shaun Harper of the University of Southern California, one of the nation’s most highly respected racial equity experts, on Thursday, March, 11, 2021, from 3:30 p.m. – 5 p.m. The event, which will include a Q&A session, will be hosted on Zoom. Please save the date, and watch your email soon for the registration link.

We are fortunate to have someone of Dr. Harper’s stature to launch this important new lecture series. He is the Clifford and Betty Allen Chair in Urban Leadership at USC, where he also serves as the Provost Professor of Education and Business. He is also Founder and Executive Director of the nationally-regarded USC Race and Equity Center, and President of the American Educational Research Association, as well as editor-at-large of Time magazine. You can read more about Dr. Harper below from his website.
As many of you know, I have often cited Dr. Harper’s work, particularly his assertion that the last great bastion of white supremacy in higher education is the curriculum. His insights have informed my call for the Faculty Senate to decolonize our curriculum, a theme that he will address in his lecture, along with how faculty can go about creating inclusive classroom environments, why racial equity is important, and how we can dismantle systems of oppression in higher education.

As I have also shared elsewhere, William Paterson will participate in the Equity Institute through the USC Race and Equity Center, in which a group of twenty senior staff and faculty members will participate in training that identifies and addresses the challenges that undermine racial equity on our campus. They will then be able to share this knowledge with colleagues and help ensure that it guides our policies, practices, and procedures.

The President’s Diversity Lecture and our participation in the Race and Equity Center Equity Institute are just two of several new diversity and inclusion initiatives at William Paterson this year, which also include the formation of a standing Council for Equity and Justice and a Community Dialogue Series. I want to thank David Jones, Chief Diversity Officer and Director of Talent Management, and Yolany Gonell, Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Black Cultural Center, and everyone else who has been involved in doing great work to launch these important initiatives.
