Region 2, District 2: More than 80 people attended an open house Feb. 18 to learn more about the reconstruction of Interstate 39 through Rockford and Cherry Valley. The event, held at CherryVale Mall in Rockford, also included updates on work that will continue this construction season to convert the I-39/U.S. 20 and Harrison Avenue cloverleaf interchange into a diverging-diamond interchange.

Rebuild I-39 is a $302 million, multiyear reconstruction project between the Harrison Avenue interchange and Blackhawk Road. Work began in 2023 with the reconstruction of the I-39/U.S. 20 interchange, which was completed in 2024. Work began in 2024 to convert the Harrison Avenue/U.S. 20 interchange from a cloverleaf to a diverging diamond interchange. The majority of the project will be substantially complete by the end of this year, with miscellaneous work to be completed in early 2026.

Region 5, District 9: A three-year rehabilitation of the  bridge carrying I-24 over the Ohio River in Massac County will begin, weather permitting, Monday, March 3. Work will install a new deck overlay, replace expansion joints, repair structural steel, paint the bridge and resurface pavement.

To accommodate the work zone, I-24 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction to install a temporary concrete barrier along the centerline. Width restrictions will be in effect through Oct. 14. The times of future restrictions will be announced as the overall $38 million project continues.

The overall project expected to be completed in 2027.

Motorists can expect delays during peak hours and should consider alternate routes to avoid the area. The Brookport bridge, which carries U.S. 45 over the Ohio River, has a weight limit of 15 tons and is closed to semi traffic. The bridge is restricted to 8 feet wide and 9 feet, 6 inches tall.
