Bill C-22 Passes Second Reading
On Tuesday, October 18th, MPs voted in a unanimous decision to pass the second reading of Bill C-22, the Canada Disability Act. We appreciate the all-party support of this historic legislation. The Bill is now before a Parliamentary Committee for further study and to hear from witnesses. The hearings formally start on October 31.
There is a lot more work to do before the Bill is passed into law and there are only 30 or so sitting days left in the Parliamentary calendar until the end of the year.
Inclusion Canada supports fast-tracking the Bill through the committee stage and all other stages as quickly as possible while ensuring the Bill is adequately considered in the legislative process. It is clear that people with disabilities should not be living in poverty anymore. The legislation is foundational and is designed as a first step to create the law. Once the law is enacted, we can start working with government and the disability community to design the actual benefit through regulations.
We need to pass Bill C-22 in 2022 so we can have a Canada Disability B in 2023.
We still need your support to make the Canada Disability Benefit a reality.
