Graham Finch

Graham Finch is a talented artist who enjoys creating art with colored pencils as his medium. Graham has always enjoyed drawing and creating things, such as churches. For many years, he has built structures such as cathedrals, castles, and buildings of all sorts out of Jenga blocks. He also likes to draw on his Etch A Sketch. The inspiration for the artwork displayed is from National Geographic photos of animals.
Graham has been creating artwork for about 10 years, and has been taking art classes at the Eye Studio for about three years. He has been featured in Unique magazine for his artistry. Graham takes after his father, who is also an artist!

We thank Graham for sharing his beautiful artwork to display in our Art Gallery!

What Went Well For You Today?:
A Presentation on Gratitude and Learning to be Positive
Presented by: Dr. Christina Michaelson, Ph.D |
Le Moyne College Positive Psychology Professor

September 20th @ 6pm
Typically, we spend a lot of our attention on problems, challenges, and what is not right in our lives and in the world. That certainly benefits us in many ways as we solve problems, meet challenges, and even prevent some difficulties. However, in that process, we tend to neglect to notice some of the positive experiences in our lives and to appreciate them, and research has demonstrated that an increased focus on gratitude can add to our happiness and quality of life. In this presentation, we will talk about some specific strategies for shifting our focus to the positive, developing appreciation for our experiences, and thus adding to our life satisfaction.

Alissa Camardella
Going for the Gold
Alissa Camardella has 6 big reasons to smile this summer – one for each medal she received in recent swimming competitions.

"Ali," 25, was introduced to the swimming pool just three days after she was adopted at age 4. Her adoptive mother, Helen, has always been an athlete and loves swimming herself. Because of this passion of hers, she wanted to share in this wholesome, rewarding activity with her daughter. “She’s the reason I love swimming and competing,” Ali told us.
As Ali’s interest developed over the years, so too did her swimming ability. She is renowned as one of the area’s best swimmers, has won several medals in the past, and is always striving to improve. While Ali’s work ethic and record-breaking performances have drawn much admiration from her coaches, they are equally appreciative of her for a different reason. Ali has asserted herself as a coaching assistant and voluntarily helps her fellow athletes to reach their goals just as she has.
This past June, Ali was selected as one of thousands of participants in this year’s Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando, FL. With competitors from all over the U.S. and even other countries, Ali needed to put forth her best efforts in order to win even one medal. Ali did better than that, winning a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke event, a silver medal in the 4x50m relay event, and another silver medal in the 100m freestyle event. “It’s a great feeling knowing I did so well against people from all over the world,” she said.
While her results were a testament to her ability and hard work, the USA Games coaches’ impression of her was a testament to her leadership abilities. Because Ali was seen motivating and instructing those around her during the competitions, they mistook her for being an actual coach!

After her two-week stay in Florida, which consisted of both competitive and leisurely activities, Ali headed home for the Special Olympics’ State Games, which were held in Ithaca, NY. As if her accomplishments in the USA Games weren’t enough, Ali was determined to place in additional events. Her efforts helped secure a bronze medal in the team relay event, and followed this up with not one but two gold medals – one in the 100m freestyle event and one in the 100m backstroke event.
Though Ali deserves much of the credit for these great feats, she is always quick to credit her mother for her accomplishments both in and out of the pool. “Being in the water and competing are just a part of who I am,” Ali said. “And I have my mom to thank for all of that.”

Helen and Ali still swim together almost every day. For the Camardellas, swimming goes beyond a favorite pastime, a method of competition, and even an activity that has promoted self-confidence. It represents an unbreakable bond shared between a mother and a daughter, and one that has only strengthened their relationship over the past two decades.

“It means everything that she took after me, and I’m glad we’re able to do it together all these years later,” Helen said. “I’m over-the-moon proud of her."

On behalf of all of us at Advocates, we’re also very proud of Ali’s tremendous successes this summer. Congratulations, Ali!
If you have a caring family member or friend who is looking for meaningful work and the opportunity to support someone as inspirational as Ali, please encourage them to
apply on our website. We look forward to meeting them!
