Mentor Spotlight

Melvin Ocasio

The Man with the Recipe for Success

At first glance, the roles of a culinary chef and a Direct Support Professional (Mentor) might not have much in common. But Melvin Ocasio, who has thrived in both positions, is proof of just how many similarities exist between them.

Melvin’s impressive resume includes titles such as “Executive Chef,” “General Manager,” and “Lead Cooking Instructor.” His accomplished career in the kitchen was driven by his passion for the culinary arts and the joy of creating delicious experiences for others. However, life had a way of redirecting his path.

In 2019, Melvin suffered a significant back injury while working in the kitchen. The injury led to a recommendation for surgery, which forced him to step back from his long-standing career as a chef. While initially discouraged by this setback, Melvin soon discovered that it wasn’t the universe closing a door, but rather guiding him toward a new and even more fulfilling purpose.

For the first time in years, Melvin wasn’t tethered to the fast-paced, high-pressure environment of a restaurant kitchen. He spent time reflecting on what truly made him happy, realizing that his passion for cooking had always been tied to the joy of teaching others. Cooking had always brought him fulfillment, but something deeper was missing – more meaningful connections and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives.

This realization set Melvin on a new course. He started offering virtual cooking classes during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing on another of his talents: holistic healing. Combining his knowledge of stress-relieving techniques with the art of cooking, Melvin introduced a unique approach to his classes that not only taught how to prepare meals but also how to embrace mindfulness and wellness. The virtual format was well-received, and Melvin was delighted to see children and adults alike eager to learn from him.

Because of his proven ability to connect with people regardless of age, circumstance, or ability, a close friend encouraged Melvin to consider applying his talents to the field of supporting people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). At first, Melvin was skeptical because of his lack of experience. However, after giving it a try, he was pleasantly surprised by how much joy he found in working with individuals who needed his guidance and encouragement.

Now, with over four years of experience working as a Mentor with Advocates, Melvin has found a new sense of purpose. While working in the kitchen was rewarding in its own way, he feels that mentoring those with disabilities is far more fulfilling. "It's not about the paycheck," Melvin told us. "It's about making a difference in someone’s life, helping them to succeed, and knowing I played a part in that."

Through working in this field, Melvin has learned the importance of patience, empathy, and understanding. He follows four key principles in both his personal and professional life – principles that help him navigate challenges with a positive outlook. “The first is that you should always do your best, no matter what,” Melvin started. “Giving your best effort brings positivity and confidence, which is key to overcoming obstacles.” His next principle is to try not to take things personally in this field. “People with disabilities may face challenges that others don’t, so it's essential to approach each situation with understanding and compassion,” he said. Also, Melvin acknowledges the power that words have, regardless of the situation. “Always be impeccable with your words,” he told us. “It’s so important to deliver messages with kindness and finding solutions rather than focusing on problems.” Melvin’s fourth and final guiding principle is another one we can all generally benefit from adopting. “Don’t make assumptions about people or their abilities,” he said. “Asking questions and seeking clarity help to build trust and ensures that everyone’s needs are met.”

mmThese principles have helped Melvin build lasting relationships with the individuals he supports. But one of his proudest accomplishments is the connection he shares with his own children. His daughter Savannah, a budding baker at Disney in Orlando, and his son Kevin, a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, often call him when they need advice or support. "When they reach out to me, even when they’re at their lowest, it reminds me of the importance of being present in their lives," Melvin says. “I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished, but I’m even prouder that they know they can rely on me.”

When asked about his goals, Melvin shared that he hopes to one day open a small center where he can teach life skills to people with disabilities. This space would allow him to work with both individuals and groups on a daily basis, continuing to share his wisdom and experience. For Melvin, his career isn’t about titles or accolades – it's about the impact he makes on the lives of others. "The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that I’m making a difference," he said. "Some days are harder than others, but I know that the work I do today will make a difference tomorrow."

Outside of work, Melvin naturally enjoys cooking, going for nature walks, and listening to music. He finds peace in being away from the chaos of daily life, often seeking out quiet places where he can recharge. Melvin is also an ordained minister, which adds another layer to his commitment of service to others.

Reflecting on his life and career, Melvin often thinks of cooking as a metaphor for how he approaches his work in supporting people as a mentor. “When you’re cooking, you don’t want to over-season the dish,” he said. “The same goes for working with individuals. You don’t want to change who they are. You just need to understand them and help them become the best version of themselves, without trying to force change. It’s about balance and respect.”

For Melvin, the recipe for success isn’t about financial gain or individual accolades. It’s about finding fulfillment in the small moments, wholeheartedly being there for others, and sharing his talents with those who need it most. Advocates is proud to have Melvin on its team and sincerely thanks him for his conscientious work.
