Plain Language Video Explains Medical Assistance in Dying Bill

In February 2019 the Government of Canada introduced Bill C-7, which expands access to medical assistance in dying. This Bill will further  stigmatize people with a disability in the Canadian healthcare system.  Federation member Community Living Ontario  has created a  plain language video  explaining the importance of opposing this Bill.

COVID-19 & the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The HillNote and the Library of Parliament have put together a list outlining the challenges facing people with a disability during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential impact on health- and inclusion-related rights. The list also highlights key actions the government could take to ensure the rights of people with a disability are protected.

#COVIDdisability: Disability-Related Resources for Families and People with an Intellectual Disability

COVID-19 has proven to have significant and lasting consequences for people with an intellectual disability and their families.

We are continuing to share disability-related resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic  on our website as they become available, pulled together in one spot for families. These include plain-language tools, resources for caregivers, and information on mental health, available financial support, and discrimination guidelines.

If you find reliable information you think will be of use to people with disabilities and their supporters, we invite you to share it with us on social media using the #COVIDdisability hashtag.

Highlights of our recent work.

  • Michael Bach, Managing Director of the Institute for Research and Development on Inclusion and Society, participated in Community Living Ontario's first-ever Inspiring Conversations speakers series. The conversation explored how the community living sector can build on radical and innovative changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Registered Disability Savings Program (RDSP) & Homeownership Solutions Lab

P eople with a developmental disability can and do own their own homes. Many more want to - but lack the same tools to attain homeownership that public policy provides to Canadians without disabilities. The current design of the RDSP makes it nearly impossible to use these savings towards homeownership. To fill this gap, My Home My Community has created a homeownership tool designed specifically for people with disabilities to access homeownership using an existing savings program. My Home My Community and its partners will be calling for the federal government to implement the RDSP Homeownership Plan.
