This year’s conference features keynote speaker Dr. José Bowen. Dr. Bowen’s books, Teaching Naked & Teaching Naked Techniques (co-authored with Edward Watson), challenge us to make the sacred in-class time we have with students “massively better.” The conference committee invites you to register for and engage in conference sessions designed to positively impact your teaching.
The conference registration is closed, but stay tuned for recordings and resources from the sessions.
A classroom, whether physical or virtual, is a reflection of the world in which we live. Research has shown that students from underrepresented groups often face additional challenges. By implementing inclusive teaching practices, faculty create learning environments where all students feel they belong and have the opportunity to achieve at high levels.
Do all students feel welcome and see themselves as able to succeed in your classes? How inclusive is your class?
Jose Bowen and
Darvelle Hutchins suggest being intentional when selecting your multimedia (images, videos, blogs), required readings, and illustrative examples so that your course site and curriculum reflect diverse people, voices, and viewpoints.
Viji Sathy and
Kelly Hogan share examples of inclusive syllabus statements and language. See some example syllabi, diversity statements, and syllabus activities.
Ece Karavalcin shares her strategy for staying engaged with students throughout the semester using a survey, results from which she saves on a spreadsheet to help customize the course to the particular students in the class.
