Golden Eagles welcome incoming president to Cal State LA

The Cal State LA community gathered on Oct. 3 at the Luckman Street of the Arts to welcome Incoming President Berenecea Johnson Eanes during her first visit to campus. The reception was held on the second day of her two-day visit. The visit is part of Eanes’ listening tour and included meetings with groups of faculty, students, staff, and administrators, tours of campus centers and offices, and a fireside chat with students. Eanes will assume the role of the University’s ninth president starting Jan. 8, 2024. She will be Cal State LA’s first woman president. Cal State LA earns prestigious Seal of Excelencia certification

Cal State LA has received Excelencia in Education’s Seal of Excelencia for demonstrating through data, evidence-based practices, and leadership how it is intentionally serving Latino students. Excelencia in Education is the nation’s premier authority on efforts to accelerate Latino student success in higher education. “Cal State LA is honored to receive the Seal of Excelencia. This certification affirms and confirms our University’s deep commitment to Latino student success. We will continue to be a university where Latino students thrive, and we will continue to graduate students who achieve the lives and careers they imagined,” said Cal State LA’s Interim President Leroy M. Staff Appreciation Breakfast set for Oct. 31

The Staff Appreciation Breakfast will be held Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 9 a.m. in the Golden Eagle Ballrooms. The event recognizes the contributions of University staff members, and celebrates milestone work anniversaries. The winner of the Outstanding Staff Award will be announced during the breakfast. EagleCon 2023 to celebrate 10th anniversary with three-day conference

EagleCon at Cal State LA is launching its first Speculative Fiction Across Media (SFAM LA) conference, as part of its 10th anniversary celebration. This event will bring together creators from the entertainment industries of Los Angeles with scholars from around the world to discuss and explore the history and current state of diversity in speculative genres. The conference will take place over a three-day period, from Oct. 18 to Oct. 20, at various locations on campus. Calling for events and programs for heritage month calendar

The Cross Cultural Centers and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion are requesting colleges, departments, and offices to submit any events and programs that pertain to upcoming heritage month celebrations. This is part of a larger effort to recognize and celebrate heritage months year-round to support identity development and enhance a sense of belonging, community, and connections for students, staff, and faculty. Please complete the community calendar form by the listed dates to allow sufficient time to finalize the heritage month calendar.

Submission deadlines:

  • Oct. 13 for LGBTQ+ History Month (Oct. 1-31) 
  • Oct. 13 for Filipinx American History Month (Oct. 1-31) 
  • Oct. 25 for Native American Heritage Month (Nov. 1-30)

Benefits enrollment period is open until Oct. 13

The annual Open Enrollment period for CalPERS health, dental, vision, FlexCash, Dependent Care Reimbursement Account (DCRA), Health Care Reimbursement Account (HCRA), or voluntary benefits plans is open until Oct. 13. Eligible employees may enroll, change plans, and add eligible family members during this time. The effective date for all updates is Jan. 1, 2024. Full details on health plans are available on the CalPERS website.

Cal State LA introduces a new Experts Guide webpage for media

The Office of Communications and Public Affairs has redesigned its Cal State LA Experts Guide on a new, user-friendly platform with a searchable function. This electronic guide provides a summary of the areas of expertise of Cal State LA faculty and staff who have expressed a willingness to work with the media. Journalists are often seeking experts to comment on breaking news stories in a timely manner. For faculty and staff interested in becoming a media source, please complete the online expert form for consideration. SB 447 repeals state-funded travel ban

Governor Newsom signed SB 447 on Sept. 13, which repealed AB 1887, a ban that prohibited state-funded travel to certain states. State funds can now be used for travel to all states. If travel to previously banned states occurred before Sept. 14, non-state funds must be used for reimbursement.

WellBeingU to host workshop on ‘Eating for Wellness’

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to learn about different ways of eating and preparing meals that can help improve overall wellness. WellBeingU will host an “Eating for Wellness” workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the South Village Community Room and Kitchen. There will be food demonstrations, recipe cards, and giveaways. Please register in advance to attend the event.

Vet Net Ally seminar offered virtually on Nov. 3

The Veterans Resource Center invites faculty, staff, and administrators to attend its Vet Net Ally seminar, an education and awareness program designed to develop a network of campus supporters for students who are connected to the military. There will be a virtual seminar offered on Friday, Nov. 3, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Deadline to register is Nov. 1. For details and to sign up, visit Vet Net Ally webpage.

Donate to Cal State LA Canned Food Drive

Support families in our community by donating to the Cal State LA Canned Food Drive, a collaboration between the University and the nonprofit United American Indian Involvement, Inc. Donations of canned goods will be accepted from Oct. 23 to Nov. 9. Drop off donations at the Center for Student Involvement or the Center for Engagement, Service, and the Public Good. Give blood at upcoming American Red Cross blood drives
