Incorrupt saints can teach many lessons to the faithful
RHODE ISLAND CATHOLIC
By Jennifer Barton, Correspondent
PROVIDENCE — What could draw thousands of people to a remote town of about 1,500 in northwestern Missouri in the middle of the summer? For numerous Catholics this year, it was to view the body of a nun who most had never heard about before. Exhumed in May, four years after her death, Sister Wilhelmina Lancaster, OSB, foundress of the Benedictine Sisters of Mary, Queen of the Apostles, was discovered preserved from decay. She may be the first African-American woman identified as incorrupt.

Herci Marsden's COPPELIA
Performed by the State Ballet of Rhode Island
Fri. and Sat., November 24 and 25
43 Dave Gavitt Way, McVinney Auditorium, Providence
Join us an enchanting performance as you are transported to the magical world of "Coppelia," one of the greatest comic ballets of the 19th century. Originally choreographed in 1870, "Coppelia" holds a special place in the history of ballet as it was the first to incorporate traditional dances and music, including national dances from Act I like the Czárdás (Hungarian) and the Mazurka (Polish).
This timeless ballet holds a special connection to Rhode Island as it was first performed by State Ballet of RI in 1962 in Providence. During that memorable performance, founding prima ballerina Herci Marsden graced the stage in the role of Swanhilda!

On the Death of Pets and Persons: Euthanasia
MARK BRADFORD
|
I keep up with news related to disability by using Google Alerts. If you’ve never used them, they’re a great way to make sure you know about any new article that appears online related to a topic you are interested in. Google sends me a digest each day of articles that are relevant to the topics I have requested.
One of the topics I have asked to be alerted about is euthanasia. I oppose using that word since it attempts to sanitize something horrifically evil with a timbre of compassion. Its Greek root, euthanatos, literally means good or easy death. Nevertheless, it has found its way into the way our language expresses the act of killing people who ask to die. It is a word whose application has tragically jumped from the animal kingdom to humans.

Sts. Simon and Jude (Taddeo), Apostles
October 28
Two Saints and two Apostles of Christ, according to tradition both martyrs of the Gospel in Mesopotamia. The Church remembers Saint Simon, known as the “Zealot” and Saint Jude Thaddeus.
|
St. John Paul II, Pope
October 22
This great Pope tirelessly proclaimed the love of Christ, the “Redeemer of man,” and shepherded the Church into the third Christian millennium. His feast day is celebrated on October 22, the anniversary of the inaugural Mass in 1978 at which he cried out to the world, “Be not afraid!”

Solemnity of All Saints
November 1
The Solemnity of All Saints began in the East in the 4th century, and then spread elsewhere, being observed on different dates: on 13 May in Rome, on 1 November in England and Ireland beginning in the 8th century. It was the latter date that was adopted in Rome as well, beginning in the 9th century. The solemnity falls toward the end of the liturgical year, when the Church fixes its gaze on the last things. It is, therefore, fitting that the thought of those who have already crossed over the gates of Heaven should find a place in their hearts.

Bishop Henning's latest column in Rhode Island Catholic
‘Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…’
| |
There are things in this world that are worse than death. Chief among them is the loss of one we hold dear. If we are fortunate, we love someone enough that we would risk or even give our lives to save them. At our best, we human beings are capable of loving another more than ourselves, more than life itself. | |
