To My Neighbors,
A week ago marked the fourth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision, which ended the federal constitutional right to abortion that women had relied on for nearly half a century. Since then, responsibility for protecting access to reproductive care has shifted to state legislatures. Across the country, more states have enacted abortion bans or severe restrictions, leaving many women without access to essential care and, in some cases, facing devastating health consequences.
I’m proud that Connecticut has been at the forefront of protecting women’s reproductive rights by improving abortion access, strengthening legal protections for healthcare providers, shielding patient privacy, and expanding access to reproductive health resources.
As we celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary and renew our commitment to democratic ideals - to prioritize the protection of individual liberties and equal justice - we should recognize that reproductive healthcare is part of that promise. We need to protect the rights of all women to have bodily autonomy and privacy, and trust women to make their own decisions about their lives, especially when it comes to if, when and how to become a parent.
