Independence Day in the United States reminds us of the British immigrants who came to this indigenous land in pursuit of economic prosperity, new beginnings and religious freedom for themselves and their families. Their presence in what later became the United States and their declaration that we are all created equal, deserve equal representation in government, and possess unalienable rights of "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" set our country's path for centuries to come.

 

Ever since, this nation has been the home of the hardworking tired and poor, and all of those fighting better life. They come from over one hundred countries in different ways with different histories. Our city has been part of their stories which we must never forget. We have benefited from the abundant diversity of music, language, history, dance, art and food they have shared with us.

 

As we celebrate, let us keep present the alarming situation at the border, the ripping apart of families by violence right at home, and the history of us who have freely chosen to come to this country and those who have not. Let us be reminded of our duty to welcome and treat with dignity those who simply come to work hard and provide for their families. Let us be reminded of duty to defend the rights of the newly immigrated, the generations of Americans who are yet to be free, those from whom we borrowed this land, and the voiceless that have to live in the shadows. Let us be reminded of our duty to never forget that our history is filled with challenges to our civil and human rights that we have and continue to overcome. Let us be reminded that the same rights many try to deny us are the same ones that empower us to resist injustice locally and nationally, and build a more equitable society for all.

El Día de Independencia en los Estados Unidos nos recuerda de los inmigrantes británicos que llegaron a esta tierra indígena en busca de prosperidad económica, nuevos comienzos y libertad religiosa para ellos y sus familias. Su presencia en lo que luego se convirtió en los Estados Unidos y la declaración de que todos somos creados iguales, merecemos igual representación en el gobierno y poseemos derechos inalienables de "Vida, Libertad y la búsqueda de la Felicidad" marcarían el camino de nuestro país por centenares de años.

 

Desde ese entonces, esta nación ha sido el hogar de los que sienten derrotados, y todos aquellos que luchan por una vida mejor. Vienen de más de cien países de diferentes maneras con diferentes historias. Nuestra ciudad ha sido parte de sus historias la cuales nunca debemos olvidar. Nos hemos beneficiado de la abundante diversidad de música, idioma, historia, baile, arte y comida que han compartido con nosotros.

 

Mientras celebremos, mantengamos presente la alarmante situación en la frontera, el desgarro de las familias por la violencia aquí en casa, y la historia de muchos que hemos elegido libremente venir a este país y de aquellos que no. Recordemos nuestro deber de acoger y tratar con dignidad a aquellos que vienen a trabajar duro y proveerle a su familia. Recordemos el deber de defender los derechos de los recién inmigrados, las generaciones de estadounidenses aún luchando por libertad y los que viven en las sombras en silencio. Recordemos nuestro deber de nunca olvidar que nuestra historia está llena de desafíos a nuestros derechos civiles y humanos que hemos y que seguimos superando. Recordemos que los mismos derechos que muchos intentan negarnos son los mismos que nos empoderan a resistir injusticias al nivel local y nacional, y construir una sociedad más equitativa para todos.
