It's the most wonderful time of the year (well,  for some families). Preparing your child for a new school year can also be stressful and scary! We understand and want to help. Please be sure to read our tips for helping your child transition to the new school year. Also, in this newsletter, we have provided additional resources and information that will help prepare everyone for the big day. Here's to a great 2018-2019 school year!
Reflection & Goals for the new school year provides a variety of resources to help get kids ready for school. Check out their worksheet to plan for the school year:
Important Tips from The American Academy of Pediatrics
  • Begin a consistent sleep schedule at least a week before school.
  • Buy a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back.
    • Make sure it doesn't weigh more than 10-20% of your child's body weight
  • Provide your child with a healthy breakfast (that contains some protein).
    • Studies show that a nutritious breakfast helps children function better.
  • Create a work space in your child's bedroom or in the house to complete homework.
What can you do to help?!
  • Manage your nervousness! If your child sees you anxious, he/she will get anxious too.
  • Establish one-on-one time with your child every day (even if it's just for 15 minutes) to read a book or go on a short walk. It's a great way to take a break and reconnect.
  • Plan a Last Day Before School event (and include your child in the planning), whether it is a fun activity or a quick trip to say good bye to summer.
  • Avoid last minute drills from last year's curriculum because it might create more anxiety. Allow your child to enjoy a few extra days of relaxation before the big day!
  • Go on a special shopping trip! And if your budget allows, buy something that your child really loves and will get him/her excited for the first day.
  • Check out what these kids have to say about how you can help.
