Welcome to your India Basin Newsletter for January

Welcome to the latest newsletter for the India Basin Waterfront Park Project, a partnership between the Trust for Public Land, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, and the Bayview-Hunters Point community.

The project is environmental justice in action that aims to build a park that is both spectacular and crucial to the health of San Francisco’s southeast communities with an emphasis on public access, social equity, waterfront recreation, resiliency to sea level rise, and habitat and wetland restoration and enhancement. It will seamlessly combine the historical former ship-building site at 900 Innes Avenue with two already existing parks that will each undergo improvements, India Basin Shoreline Park and India Basin Open Space.

In this newsletter, you'll receive regular updates on the project's construction, its Equitable Development Plan, and invitations to events and happenings around the project.

India Basin Shoreline Park Hosts Toy Giveaway for the Community

To wrap-up 2022, the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) hosted its India Basin Holiday in the Park Toy Giveaway last month at India Basin Shoreline Park, with support from community partners and the India Basin Waterfront Park Project. More than 150 families picked out toys, enjoyed music and refreshments, and participated in a raffle and other fun activities.

In addition to the toy giveaway, we also held a special ceremony for the newly painted India Basin Shoreline Park hypecourt: a colorful, graphic mural installed on the surface of the park’s recently resurfaced basketball court. The artist behind the hypecourt mural is Nina Fabunmi, a local artist who is a part of the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists community. She led a cohort of five local youth from Bayview-Hunters Point (BVHP) to create several designs that reflected themselves, with the final one being chosen by the community. Paint the Void helped to coordinate volunteer painters to turn the final design into a reality.

The giveaway and hypecourt were made possible by the India Basin Waterfront Park Project and its Equitable Development Plan: the blueprint to ensure we deliver a park designed by and for the BVHP community. Watch our video wrap up of the event at the link below!

India Basin Specialty Construction Trainings in 2023

We're starting the new year with job readiness trainings for the second cohort of the India Basin Waterfront Park specialty construction training program. These free trainings, in partnership with the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and its CityBuild Academy, are delivered by union professionals with other benefits such as tool and union initiation assistance, employment sponsorship as a union apprentice, and more. These trainings follow strategies highlighted in the project's Equitable Development Plan, following the initiative to provide Bayview-Hunters Point residents ample training opportunities for construction and post-construction jobs at the park.

The first session of 2023 will take place the week of January 17. If you would like to RSVP for this, or following monthly sessions, contact Eva Hopkins by email at evahopkinsaprisf@gmail.com or call (415) 821-4777.

We're excited to share that we completed the majority of pile driving at 900 Innes before the end of 2022, with 78 of the 82 piles installed. We will finish installing the final four during the next in-water work window later this year. This winter we will begin work on the site's new buildings, including prepping their foundations.
