Everywhere the Glint of Gold: The Search for the Tomb of Tutankhamun
Thursday, October 13th — 7:00—8:00 PM
Community Room
November 4, 2022 will mark the 100th anniversary of one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, the tomb of Tutankhamun. Hidden in the famed Valley of the Kings, burial place of Egypt’s New Kingdom pharaohs, the tomb had laid nearly undisturbed for over 3,000 years until its discovery by an English archaeologist, Howard Carter. Crammed with priceless objects, Mr. Carter took nearly ten years to record, photograph and empty the tomb.
This lecture first recounts the extraordinary chain of events leading up to the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, then we will see amazing images of the breathtaking array of spectacular ancient artifacts it contained, including gold, precious stones, sculpted alabaster and beautifully carved wooden objects. Most of the treasures you will see have never been outside of Egypt and many represent much more than first meets the eye.
Come and spend time inside King Tut’s tomb – without having to travel to Egypt!
About the presenter: Stephen R. Phillips, Ph.D., is the Curatorial Research Coordinator in the Egyptian Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. During the Revolution, the British bombarded and captured the fort in the fall of 1777 as part of their conquest of Philadelphia. What happened here in 1777 may well have changed American history, but few people are aware of these events. During the six-week siege, 450 American troops had to defend against 2,000 British and Hessian troops, a large fleet of ships and 228 cannon.
Presented by Michael Jesberger, historical reenactor, lecturer and tour guide.
