With many homes in Indian Wells sitting empty during the hotter months, and many cars sitting un-driven in driveways, it is important for our residents - both full-time and part-time - to protect their homes and belongings.
That's why we are providing this
public service announcement, presented in partnership with your Indian Wells Special Enforcement Team.
These are difficult times for everyone. We want to help make things a little safer. Check your home, check your vehicles, and offer to help check on your neighbor's belongings if they are unable to do so. We are all in this together.

City Finances Post COVID-19
As a tourist destination, Indian
Wells depends on large-scale events and dollars spent by travelers to support our economy. Therefore our City has been hit particularly hard by the impacts of COVID-19.
Overall, the City anticipates more than $9.7 million dollar decrease in General Fund revenues through June 30, 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Operating losses due to the closure of the Indian Wells Golf Resort in mid-March are estimated at $1.3 million alone for just the current fiscal year 2019-20.
Fortunately, we are not heading into this predicament unprepared. Readying Indian Wells for a financial shock has been a core philosophy of the City Council for several years. The City was also quick to address expected revenue losses from the canceled BNP Paribas Tennis Tournament and closure of our local resorts by putting our fiscal plan in place, using anticipated surplus revenues in this year and next year’s budgets, delaying planned donations, deferring capital improvement projects, and controlling costs in our current operations. These actions should allow City Council to move through this period
without
using City reserves.
If you have further questions about how the City is responding to the fiscal impacts of COVID-19, please see the full letter from Mayor Ty Peabody
here.

Tree Trimming
It's time for annual tree trimming! In order to keep our City safe and beautiful, City code requires that palm trees be trimmed back before June 30 for Date Palms and July 30 for Washingtonia Palms each year.

Pool Safety
Summer is around the corner and that means more of us are enjoying time in the pool. That also means that its a perfect time to review pool safety - particularly for children.
Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional or accidental injury-related death to children ages 1-4 years old in Riverside County and 86% of all drowning and near-drowning incidents occur in backyard pools or spa/Jacuzzi. Please keep the following safety tips in mind when enjoying the water:
- SUPERVISE! Never leave a child alone near a pool or spa, bathtub, pond, toilet, bucket of liquid, or any standing water.
- Empty wading pools immediately after use and store upside-down.
- Floaties, inflatable water wings and water toys are not water safety devices and should never be used for that purpose.
- Never rely on devices or swimming lessons to protect children.
The Riverside County Department of Public Health has provided a number of tips to help you protect your pool area, prevent accidents, and prepare to respond in an emergency.
Visit their website here for the full list.

Emergency Preparedness
Planning and preparation is key to ensuring that you and your family are safe and protected during a natural disaster. It is the responsibility of every individual to take the steps needed to prepare for earthquakes, fires, terrorist attacks or any other kind of emergency that may take place.
By assessing your own personal needs and creating a plan that fits those needs, you will be in the best position when an emergency strikes. We suggest that all our residents:
- Sign up for Nixle for local emergency alerts (text 92210 to 888777 to sign up)
- Get a well-stocked emergency kit to keep in your home and car
- Make an emergency plan and identify others who you would notify or check on in case of an emergency

Vote by Mail Ballots
The November Election will be here before we know it. To ensure accessible voting for everyone in light of the health concerns we're experiencing due to coronavirus, Governor Newsom has ordered that Vote by Mail ballots be issued to everyone registered to vote throughout the State of California.
Other tools and changes may be forthcoming, and we will keep our residents informed as Election Day approaches.
