Dear Indiana-ACC Colleague,
The year got off to a busy start with our Indiana-ACC 2021 Virtual Advocacy Event. We met with legislators to discuss raising the tobacco tax, vaping flavor restrictions, and maternal & infant mortality. In addition, Richard Kovacs, MD, MACC, testified at a state senate hearing on House Bill 1040, and Ryan Mallory, MD, and Jason Gilge, MD accompanied him. The bill addresses education around sudden cardiac death in athletes, and it has moved to the senate. We hope that you'll continue to be engaged with state advocacy and be responsive when you receive legislative alerts. All politics are local, and your voice makes a difference.
It is imperative that we all contact our legislators now and urge them to raise the cigarette tax by $2 per pack and institute an equitable tax for e-liquids and related products to ensure Indiana sees the public health benefits associated with the tax.
State of the State
Each year, chapters across the country provide a "State of the State" report to the ACC. I wanted to share several of our 2020 accomplishments.
- Statewide Virtual Webinars During Covid-19 Pandemic: held five webinars between 04/01/2020 – 05/13/2020 involving issues related to the clinical and business impacts and solutions to cardiovascular care related to the pandemic. Panelist representation was statewide and included the entire cardiovascular care team. We partnered with the Illinois Chapter for our COVID-19 cath lab protocols webinar by including an Illinois-ACC physician member on the panel and inviting Illinois-ACC members to participate along with the Indiana-ACC membership. This was a “silver-lining” during the pandemic because the robust participation connected members from every part of the state. Indiana has never had this magnitude of member engagement in such a short period of time. The recorded webinars have been added to our website as enduring education.
- The Indiana-ACC Women in Cardiology (WIC) Section remains active and strong with excellent leadership from Dr. Pantila Bateman. Focus is on networking, mentoring, work-life balance, and professional well-being. Held one WIC virtual meeting on 09/10/20 entitled Breaking through Imposter Syndrome and Perfectionism Complex: Avoiding Burnout by Reframing Our World View led by Katarzyna Niewiadomska, PhD. This is the fourth year in a row in which a meeting of this section has been held.
- The Indiana-ACC participated in the collaborative MidWest WIC Alliance grant project She Looks Like a Cardiologist: Developing Pathways for High School Girls to Pursue a Career in Cardiology. This program is intended to inspire female junior and senior high school students with an interest in science, research, or medicine to consider the exciting field of Cardiology.
- Active CV Team Council led by Constance Adams, MS, RN, CCNS, CCRN with the goal of engaging cardiovascular team members across the state. Held a virtual meeting 09/09/20 entitled Influencing and Leading with Authenticity: The Six Types of Leadership That Match your Emotional and Behavioral Profile led by Katarzyna Niewiadomska, PhD.
- Indiana-ACC, along with the Illinois and Wisconsin Chapters, participated in the “Young Scholars Program” on behalf of the Academic Leadership Council, Diversity, and Inclusion Task Force.
- Formation of a new Chapter cardio-oncology section.

Tell Us Who You Are! Participate in the ACC Census
ACC is collecting information of its members through the ACC Census. Responses help us decide where resources, energy and funds are allocated. Be counted and update your profile to ensure that your education and communication preferences are heard! Let’s shape the future of cardiovascular care together: Update your profile today!
Throughout the month of March, the ACC recognized the impact women have had on the field of cardiovascular medicine. ACC.org/CelebrateWomen features videos of member leaders honoring the women who have inspired them in their careers, a timeline of women’s accomplishments in the field, and a collection of articles highlighting women’s perspectives and contributions to cardiology. To mark the occasion, the College is also encouraging FIT members within 6 months of their training end date and Associate Fellows within 3 years of the end of their training to advance to Fellowship. When they use code MyFACC, we’ll waive the $150 application fee!
Are you planning to submit an NCDR research proposal this year? Don’t miss the April 9 deadline! Last year, NCDR changed its Research & Publications (R&P) cycle to offer one research proposal deadline annually, with one annual review meeting for all NCDR programs except the STS/ACC TVT Registry. All research proposal applications will be scored by the same R&P Committee member and will receive the same consideration. Learn more and submit your proposal by April 9.

Three New CardioSmart Infographics on Women and Heart Disease
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S., causing more women's deaths than all cancers, including breast cancer. At the same time, women often ignore symptoms and are less likely to get optimal treatment for heart conditions. The CardioSmart team has developed a series of Women and Heart Disease Infographics, showing how women can stand up for their health and watch for symptoms of heart disease before, during and after pregnancy. Download for free these infographics and find out more about heart disease in women at CardioSmart.org/Women.
A better understanding of variations in total cost of care for PCI, when evaluated against related quality of care measures in ACC's CathPCI Registry, may help facilities improve the value of care delivery, according to an abstract presented at ACC's Cardiovascular Summit Virtual. Researchers benchmarked the average total cost of care, in terms of the amounts charged and allowed for reimbursement, for elective and nonelective PCI procedures. The ACC partnered with FAIR Health, a convener of claims data, to identify 134 procedure codes that indicate a PCI occurrence, as well as related resource utilization codes. The results may help cardiovascular clinicians better understand the total cost of care, which can guide them in identifying opportunities to address costs, while also optimizing outcomes. The Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Cost of Care Study will be available to sites participating in the CathPCI Registry in March. Read more.
