President's Message

Parin Patel, MD, FACC

Dear Indiana-ACC Colleague,

I am thrilled to start my tenure as your Indiana-ACC President, taking the reins from my friend, colleague and mentor Dr. Vijay Rao. I would like to thank Vijay for his excellent leadership over the past 3 years, navigating the COVID landscape and nevertheless hurtling forward in our mission to transform cardiovascular care and improve heart health for all Hoosiers.

Thank you to all of you, without whose support I would not be here; I am here to represent you and your interests.

Freshly energized from the national ACC Scientific Sessions in Chicago, we have much to celebrate, and even more to accomplish.

Recent Legislative Wins

Tobacco Tax Success

After years of lobbying from public health interest groups, children's advocacy organizations, and passionate healthcare providers like Julie Clary, MD, FACC; Brad Clark, DO; Vijay Rao, MD, FACC; and Angela Raymer, MBA, the Indiana General Assembly finally voted to increase the tax on tobacco products. The $2/pack increase is expected to help close the Medicare-derived $2 billion budget deficit, but more importantly, will reduce tobacco use for many Hoosiers, especially youth.

Non-Compete Legislation Progress

A watered-down bill to ban primary care physician non-compete agreements was passed in 2023, but a new bill (Senate Bill 475) bans non-compete agreements for all physicians for contracts after July 1, 2025. There remain options for payment penalties to hospitals within the first three years of employment. This is expected to be signed into law by Governor Braun next month.

New Initiatives

Best Practices Series

We have incredible clinical talent here in Indiana, and so we are introducing a new initiative to consolidate Best Practices across the state. This kicks off with the first session, an informative discussion between Dr. Chandra Kumbar, MD, FACC and myself, regarding same day discharge after electrophysiology procedures. We discuss benefits, risks, pitfalls, and strategies for implementation. The second in our series is an impactful discussion between Vijay Rao, MD, PhD, FACC, and Josh Rajkumar, PharmD, BCPS, about a pharmacist-led GDMT clinic for heart failure patients. Check it out below!

President's Office Hours

I want to hear from you about your goals, passions, and projects. I will be holding virtual office hours monthly—an informal session where you can ask questions, compare notes, explore ideas, and offer suggestions. This is an excellent opportunity for those wondering how to get involved in IN-ACC and national ACC, or for those who simply want to discuss the future of our profession.

The event offers cardiovascular clinicians spanning the entire cardiovascular care team a chance to hear from ACC leaders, staff, and other experts on health policy issues affecting patients and the profession. This signature three-day event provides an important opportunity to speak directly with members of Congress and their staff on the final day of the meeting. Here is complete information.

I look forward to serving you and working together to advance cardiovascular care throughout Indiana.
