Indiana-ACC Newsletter, June 2016
Raymond E. Dusman, MD, FACC
I’ll start with a confession. When I was inducted into the ACC in 1992 after fellowship, I did not attend the ACC Convocation ceremony. However, I am pleased to report that I did participate in the 2016 ACC Convocation during the April ACC Scientific Session in Chicago as a member of the Board of Governors. I was struck by many aspects, perhaps foremost being the rich history that the Indiana Chapter-ACC has brought to a national level as I looked around the audience and saw many of our renowned Indiana leaders present. I feel fortunate to have had many as mentors available to me throughout my career.
20th Anniversary Meeting
Please mark your calendars for a milestone celebration on October 8, 2016. Our annual scientific meeting in Indianapolis will mark the 20th year anniversary of our chapter. A link for registration is provided here for your convenience. Please take this opportunity to invite your physician, cardiovascular team member, and administrative colleagues to join you at this landmark meeting. Only through broad interest and involvement can we maintain an active and vibrant chapter community.
Special Thanks to Dr. Ed Fry
I want to take this opportunity to recognize our immediate past president, Dr. Ed Fry, with whom I’ve had the exceptional opportunity to work closely with on ACC national and chapter matters over this past year. For those who do not know Ed well, I can tell you that his eloquent and quick wit has an established following on the Board of Governors online community. He is a true leader within our state and at the national level and is a great example of the leadership I mentioned at the onset of this message. I cannot thank Ed enough for the time that he has invested in my smooth transition into the current president’s role.
ACC Board of Governors Priorities
- MACRA
- National ACC governance issues
- Maintenance of certification
- Collaboration with ACC sections
- Collaboration with the cardiovascular team members
- Accreditation through the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care
- Advocacy
- Science and quality committee collaboration.
If Gwen Goldfarb, our executive director, or I can be of assistance in providing additional information regarding the above topics, connection to the appropriate resources within the national ACC, or topics not represented here that are foremost on your mind and/or of concern, please let us know.
2016 is off to a good start and with your help and interest can even be better going forward. I look forward to seeing you at our chapter scientific meeting on October 8th.
Sincerely,
Ray

Indiana-ACC FITs Compete at ACC.16
Travis Taylor, MD, FIT Council Rep. St. Vincent
The Indiana Chapter of the American College of Cardiology was well represented during the Inaugural FIT Jeopardy: Battle of the State Chapters Competition at ACC.16 in Chicago. Participants from Indiana University included Roja Pondicherry, Sean Bhattacharya, and Abe Khemka (our alternate). St. Vincent Hospital was represented by Travis Taylor.
The competition brought together teams from all over the country. The questions ranged from interventional to pediatric to imaging and more. It was tough! While the Indiana-ACC did not make it to the finals, the competition served to strengthen ties between the two Indiana fellowship programs and provided an opportunity to network with colleagues across the country. Make sure to support the Indiana-ACC Jeopardy team next year at ACC.17!

Indiana-ACC FIT Poster Competition Jonathan Hassel, MD, FIT Council Rep., IU
It’s that time of year for fellows to plan for the next Indiana-ACC Annual Meeting that’s coming up on October 8, 2016. The meeting is an excellent resource for the fellows to present research and network with faculty from around the state.
Every year there is a poster and oral presentation competition that provides the fellows with an excellent opportunity to gain presentation experience, receive feedback from a wide variety of faculty, and win prizes. Last year, there were seven FITs who participated in the poster competition, and hopefully this year hopefully we can have more.
I received very useful feedback and even won prize money in the past for my oral presentation and would recommend it to you. The Indiana-ACC has many opportunities for fellows to get involved in, including local and national meetings, and these experiences lay a strong foundation for one's future career.

Indiana-ACC Cardiovascular Care Team Update
Kristen Combes, MSN, ANP-BC
It is my distinct pleasure to serve as the Cardiovascular Team Member (CVT) liaison for the next three years. Please join me in expressing thanks to our outgoing CVT liaison Sheree Schroeder, MSN, RDCS, FASE, AACC, for her three years of service and leadership to this organization.
Membership CVT’s are once again the fastest growing sub group of ACC members at the national level, and our Indiana membership continues to grow each year. Who makes up Indiana CVT membership? Nearly 80% of our members are registered nurses, 15% nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and 5% management and pharmacists. For 2015 our membership for our chapter increased. It is our goal to have a ten percent increase in CVT members for 2016, so please spread the word about the benefits of this organization with your peers. Learn more at www.acc.org/membership
Meetings Each ACC meeting brings additional opportunities for professional growth, networking, and continuing education for CVTs. Mark your calendar for three important upcoming meetings.

- The Indiana-ACC will hold a dinner meeting on November 10, 2016, at Ruth's Chris Northside in Indianapolis. Stay tuned for more details.

Team Based Care The ACC is unique among professional organizations in recognizing the value non physicians bring to patient care. In 2015, the ACC published the ACC Health Policy Statement on Cardiovascular Team Based Care: The Role of Advanced Practice Providers. This document summarized the opportunities and utilization of team based approach in cardiovascular care highlighting the logistics, effectiveness, and requirements of team based care. This document is available for review in JACC and is reflective of our many roles to augment care in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Looking for a Champion: Women in Cardiology
The ACC's Women in Cardiology (WIC) Section is looking to create WIC networks in each state, led by a WIC champion for the state. Experience has shown that state networks are the best way for women cardiologists to build community, foster mentoring relationships, and learn best practices to empower their personal and professional lives.
We need your help! Indiana-ACC needs a WIC Champion. Ideally, this individual should be knowledgeable about and already connected with other women cardiologists in Indiana; we definitely view these champions as future leaders for WIC.
Please email indiana.acc@gmail.com if you are interested in this opportunity.

Hypertension:Educational Resource for the Primary Care Team & CardioSmart Info for Your Practice
What started as a hypertension education request by the Indiana State Department of Health, led to engaging the resources of ACC and Cardiosmart to develop a webinar focusing on hypertension education.
The webinar is a very well done presentation and would serve well for education of primary care providers and healthcare team members
You can also get CardioSmart information for your practice
