Advocacy & Making a Difference
The American College of Cardiology’s Legislative Conference is coming up September 30-October 2 in Washington, DC.
Take a look at the details. Many of our Indiana-ACC colleagues will be attending, and I hope that you might consider going as it is an eye-opening experience. But one does not have to travel to Washington in order to make an impact. In fact, making an impact at the state level can be equally rewarding. Our own president-elect
Don Westerhausen, Jr., MD, FACC, INdiana-ACC President-Elect, is running for state office in Indiana House District #5 which includes the city of Mishawaka and the Granger areas. It would be great to have a physician as part of our state leadership in Indianapolis. Dr. Westerhausen commented, "As I go door to door in my district, affordable healthcare and the worry about high healthcare costs are the most frequent issues brought up by prospective voters. It is essential that physicians lead in advocating for our patients and ourselves. Personal relationships and face-to-face contacts with legislators are the best ways to tell our story and make a difference. Please consider visiting with your legislators at home or while participating in the ACC's state or federal Legislative Conferences." You can learn more about Dr. Westerhausen's campaign by visiting

Inviting legislators to your practice is another way of establishing a solid relationship with elected officials. The effectiveness of advocacy comes with taking the time to connect with those making decisions in our state, one conversation at a time.
Michael GeRue, RN, Indiana-ACC Cardiovascular Administrator Committee Chair, recently hosted a contingency of state legislators at Parkview Heart Institute, including Senator Liz Brown, Senator Andy Zay, Representative Martin Carbaugh, Representative Denny Zent, Representative Bob Morris & Representative Chris Judy (
see photo). Have you hosted a legislator at your practice yet? If you’re interested in doing so, just
let us know, and we can help make arrangements.

If Gwen Goldfarb, our chapter executive, or I can be of assistance to you,
please let us know.
Sincerely,
Ray

If you have ever served as a mentor, you know that it is the kind of experience that can have a profound impact on someone's life and career trajectory. Earlier this summer, high school student
Megna Chari spent a week at St. Vincent Heart Center and had the opportunity to shadow
ACC Immediate Past President Mary Norine Walsh, MD, MACC. Here is what Ms. Chari would like to share about her experience:
"Having the opportunity to shadow Dr. Walsh was one of the most educational and inspiring experiences ever. I learned so much when shadowing her, that it makes me so excited for a lifetime of work in the medical field. During my two days of shadowing with her, I learned so much about the heart and how and why each part of the heart does what it does. I gained an interesting perspective from Dr. Walsh as well, that I hope to carry in my everyday life. She was so calm and collected which really helped her when talking to patients and other colleagues. I felt inspired by her work and accomplishments in the ACC, and hope to be like her one day.
"One thing that really stuck out to me during my days with Dr. Walsh, were in the Team T meetings. Seeing all the doctors come together every morning and discuss each and every patient, was something I will never forget. Each doctor really cares for every patient, and seeing each doctor carefully come up with the best treatment or option for the patient was truly inspiring. I hope to be like Dr. Walsh when I am older, and have the same compassion that she has when I am a doctor. The environment of the hospital is so welcoming as well, and it made me feel like I belonged."

The Indiana-ACC Women In Cardiology held its 2nd annual meeting on August 15, 2018 at the Meridian Restaurant in Indianapolis. Eighteen women cardiologists, including cardiology fellows, from across the state attended the meeting. We were honored to have
Mary Norine Walsh, MD, MACC, ACC immediate past president, participate as well. The guest speaker
Nadia Adams, MHA, former COO of the Center of Health Innovation and Implementation Science at the Indiana University School of Medicine and now senior vice president of care innovation of Continuum Health, led the discussion on challenges of women in cardiology, including work-life balance and physician burnout. The attendees enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people, socialize, share stories and advice. At the end of the evening, everyone agreed that the goal of networking and establishing new friendships within the Indiana women in cardiology community had been accomplished. Topics for future meetings include job search, contract negotiations and re-negotiations, billing and coding. Please join us at the
Indiana-ACC Annual Meeting on October 13 where we will have a networking table during lunch.
