The New York Life Foundation has created a new $1.95M fund to support middle school afterschool, summer or expanded learning programs serving disadvantaged youth over the next three years.
Aim High will provide $750,000 to support 18 awards nationwide as follows:
* $100,000 over two years - 4 awards to be made to organizations with annual budgets of $500,000 or greater
* $50,000 over two years - 4 awards to be made to organizations with annual budgets of between $250,000 and $500,000
* $15,000 one-year grant - 10 awards will be made to programs that demonstrate promising family engagement strategies run by organizations with annual budgets of more than $150,000

4th Annual Eco-Science Fair, Indiana State Museum - April 21, 2017
Innovative Hoosier students are invited to get involved in becoming the solution to global climate issues. Students can submit science fair projects on a range of topics including aquaculture, vermiculture, composting, social awareness, urban farming, alternative fuel, and recycling initiatives in their school and community. The Duke Energy Academy at Purdue
Through this academy, a select number of high school students and teachers with interest in energy will be provided an opportunity to learn from Purdue faculty, staff, and industry leaders who are directly involved in researching and developing the energy resources needed to power the world of tomorrow. For now, the academy is open only to students who will be a junior or senior by fall 2017 and secondary school teachers, resident in the United States. Participants from previous programs will not be accepted. Participation is provided free of charge to the 42 participating students and 42 teachers. Teachers also will receive a $400 stipend on successful completion of the program. Applications due: February 14. More info HERE.
The ProjectCSGIRLS Competition for Middle School Girls challenges participants in 6th-8th grade to build something using computer science and technology that can help solve an imminent social problem under one of three themes - global health, a safer world, and intelligent technology. Judges will select semifinalists, finalists, and national winners. All finalists will receive a fully paid trip to DC for our national gala, the ultimate celebration of girls in computing, in June of 2017 during which they will participate in workshops, listen to guest speakers, tour tech companies, participate in a formal awards ceremony, and showcase their projects to the public. Registration for the 2017 ProjectCSGIRLS competition closes February 15th, 2017. The deadline to submit projects is April 15th, 2017. Computer Science in OST--Challenges & Opportunities Report
A diverse group of stakeholders-including educators, business and industry, policy makers, and parents-agree that computer science education is vital for kids to become the creators and innovators for the next generation, making technology work for them and designing solutions for their communities.
Afterschool Alliance asked the OST field what they thought about computer science education-and responses showed overwhelming interest! Almost 60 percent of respondents currently offer computer science to their students, or had offered it in the past. Despite this strong interest, OST providers indicated some big challenges to offering computer science to their students, especially finding qualified educators to teach it, securing funding, and accessing necessary technology. World of 7 Billion Student Video Contest
This year's challenge:
Students will create a short video (up to 60 seconds) about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Climate Change, Ocean Health, Rapid Urbanization.
The contest is open to all high school and middle school students (6th -12th grade) worldwide and the deadline for submissions is February 23, 2017. More info HERE.
The Afterschool STEM Hub is a collaboration among out-of-school-time program leaders and stakeholders to provide coordinated messaging and communications that impact advocacy and policy and help ensure the important place of informal, afterschool and summer programs in the STEM learning ecosystem. With the launch of The Connectory, it's easier than ever for kids to connect with STEM programs and opportunities, and for STEM practitioners to collaborate, develop partnerships, and share resources. This free online collaboration tool gives STEM program providers a chance to find partners based on interests as well as a platform to showcase STEM opportunities to families. Families, in turn, have a free, go-to resource to connect the children in their lives to STEM learning opportunities in their community.

FAFSA Opening Date
The 2017-2018 FAFSA opened on October 1! In addition to giving students an additional three months to file, the 2017-2018 FAFSA requires 2015 tax information only - removing the need for applicants to rush to file their taxes to meet the March 10 FAFSA deadline. Please encourage your seniors to file early! Remember that resources are available on the FAFSA website in their Financial Aid Tool Kit.
Scholar Success Program (SSP)
Beginning with the Class of 2017, Scholars are required to complete the Scholar Success Program (SSP) activities each year in order to maintain scholarship eligibility. Scholars must log in to ScholarTrack to track their progress. Enrolled Scholars must first register for a ScholarTrack account before they are able to access their ScholarTrack portal. YouthBuild Indy, a program managed locally by EmployIndy, is ranked in the top 15 educational performers of the 190 national YouthBuild affiliated members, in the 2014-2015 program period. This ranking is the result 86 percent of YouthBuild Indy students receiving their high school equivalency degree, and 86 percent advancing at least two grade levels in adult basic education literacy and numeracy testing for the year. For the past seven years, YouthBuild Indy has provided young adults in Marion County with education, work readiness and leadership training to help find a pathway to high school equivalency completion and nationally recognized construction credentials.

Belt Abouts is a one lesson program (approximately 45 mins) designed to engage youth ages 8 to 12 years in age, in creating healthy safety messages and increase the number of kids riding in the car properly. Strategic Campaign Funds: (Open RFA grant opportunity) aim to fund strategic issue advocacy campaigns focused on fighting childhood obesity through state, local, and tribal public policy campaigns. The duration of these grants will vary but will generally be 1 year or less. Awards can be made up to $90,000. Applications must be specific to an individual campaign goaled to change public policy in one state, local, or tribal geographic location and must align with one of the six Voices for Healthy Kids policy priorities. Budgets must include one Campaign Coordinator position and a legal contingency of no less than 5% of the operating budget as well as matching funds on behalf of the applicant.
Rapid Response grant opportunities: aim to fund short-term, reactive projects expected to be pushing policies for passage in the next three to six months and must align with one of the six Voices for Healthy Kids policy priorities. These grants provide strategic and supplemental funding for ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy issue campaigns in order to increase public policy impact in the fight against childhood obesity. Rapid Response awards range from $15,000 to $100,000 and project duration is anywhere between two weeks to six months. Funding is for non-lobbying activities only, must include a legal contingency of no less that 5%, and cannot be used for staff salaries.
