Pediatric Advocate Corner

Is your emergency department prepared to take care of pediatric in the event of a DISASTER?

Here is a checklist that can help you get started and considerations for a hospitals disaster preparedness policies.

Where do you start?

1. Evaluate the disaster plan you currently have and see what plans have been made specifically for pediatrics.

2. Review the checklist and find where your department's deficits lie.

3. Implement new policies/procedures.

4. Consider how the processes you are developing will be sustainable.  How will these processes continue long term?  For example, consider how will your department make sure the appropriate equipment is stocked all the time or that your new policies are a part of new employee training and ongoing training.

We want to help, email courtney.vanjelgerhuis@indianapolisems.org so we can add you to a listserv so we can start sharing ideas.

Pediatric Resuscitation: Before You Hit the ER Doors

"Funded through a grant from the Florida Department of Health, the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Case Presentation is a series of 12 webinars that will present one pediatric emergency case per month, beginning in January 2015. Created by experts in the field of pediatric emergency medicine, each 60-90 minute webinar will present a thorough case review of an actual pediatric incident.

Case presentations will review incidences involving but not limited to the following areas which were identified as problematic via a Pediatric EMSTARS Summary Report received in July 2013 from Florida's Prehospital EMS Tracking and Reporting System: Pediatric Resuscitation; General Pediatric Assessment; Respiratory Emergencies; Cardiovascular Emergencies; Seizures; Toxicology; Trauma; Non-accidental Trauma; Pain Management; and Air Medical Care."
