I’m based in Indianapolis, IN.
What is the make, model, and year of your car?
I drive a 2024 Kia EV9.
How long have you been driving an EV?
I’m coming up on two years of being an EV owner.
What is your typical charging method? (home, public, etc.)
I mostly use home charging. My charger is a Level 1.
How does your EV's range affect your driving habits?
Largely, it doesn't. Our EV is our main family car (we have an older gas-powered vehicle, too). Day-to-day, the EV is more convenient than the gas car -- no trips to a gas station, and we can let it charge overnight. We use our EV as much as we can, including for road trips. If we do stop for a charge, we can usually combine it with a quick shopping run or to get a bite to eat. There have been a couple of road trips where we opted to take a gas vehicle, such as a trip last summer to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, because trips that are longer or to more remote areas do require more logistics and time. But if headed to/through a city, it's no problem!
Do you experience range anxiety? If so, how do you manage it?
Generally, no. But for road trips, plan ahead -- particularly in the winter. With a gas vehicle, I don't like the tank getting too close to empty, and I treat my EV range the same way. I really appreciate that Google Maps (including the Apple CarPlay view) will show me live availability of charging stations. I've even come across ones nearby just by seeing them on the maps.
Do you find charging your EV at home to be cost-effective?
Absolutely!
Do you have any tips or advice for those considering buying an EV?
Consider your needs. But also consider the potential benefits of switching at least one vehicle to an EV. As noted above, we love not having to take our EV to the gas station and being able to get the power from our home outlet! For those without long commutes, just plugging into a standard outlet can cover day-to-day use!
