Meet a Local EV Driver!

We interviewed our friend Steve Vansak, an avid EV driver and enthusiast, to hear all about his EV experience, charging habits, and advice for those considering an EV purchase!

What is the make, model, and year of your car?

2023 Hyundai IONIQ 5 AWD SE

How long have you been driving an EV?

I've been an EV driver for a year and a half.

What is your typical charging method? (home, public, etc.)

I typically charge at home via a Level 2 charger.

How does your EV's range affect your driving habits?

The only time range affects my driving habits is on a road trip. I may pay more attention to not driving too fast if I know I will be going a long stretch between charging stations.

Do you experience range anxiety? If so, how do you manage it?

Range doesn't even enter my mind as I have a "fueling station" in my garage. On long road trips, the public charging infrastructure is better than it has ever been, but I do need to plan my stops.

Do you find charging your EV at home to be cost-effective?

Home charging is the way to save when driving an EV. If you frequent longer drives or road trips, many charging networks offer a plan you can join to save money.

Do you have any tips or advice for those considering buying an EV?

When shopping for an EV, pay more attention to the charging curve/charging speeds of the vehicle than the range. Many EVs will have a shorter range, but charge very quickly, thereby eliminating range anxiety in a different way. I feel it's better to have a vehicle that charges quickly and make multiple stops than to have a car with long range. Food, restrooms, stretching one's legs are all essential!

Many people figure out they do not need long-range cars once they tally up how far they drive daily. And for road trips, they will be stopping anyway. There are very few cars on the market whose range cannot meet the needs of most drivers.
