SLATE Automotive Hosts Grand Opening in Warsaw, IN

Drive Clean Indiana and GOEVIN had the privilege of attending Slate Auto's Open House in Warsaw, IN, earlier this month. Slate is bringing manufacturing jobs back to the Midwest. The former RR Donnelley Factory is being retrofitted to build EV pickup trucks and SUVs.

Did you know Slate Auto's CEO, Chris Barman, is originally from Crown Point, IN?!

FINAL CHANCE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EV TAX CREDITS!

When Is The EV Tax Credit Going Away?

You can only claim the $7,500 discount on vehicles purchased and placed into service by September 30. Under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the program was supposed to stick around through the end of 2032. That's no longer the case, and now the credits will cease to exist when summer 2025 ends.

Which EV Tax Credits Are Ending?

All of them. The September 30, 2025, deadline applies to all three federal EV tax credits, known as 30D, 25E, and 45W. Those are the policies that subsidize new EV purchases, used EV purchases, and commercial/leased EVs, respectively.

What about the Infrastructure Tax Credit?

The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Tax Credit 30C is set to expire, and all charging infrastructure must be placed into service by June 30, 2026.

Meet a Local EV Driver!

We interviewed our friend Leo, a Schererville local and an avid EV driver and enthusiast. Read on and learn about his experience with his brand-new EV, charging habits, and advice for those considering an EV purchase!

What is the make, model, and year of your car?

How long have you been driving an EV?

Coming up on four months on September 20!

What is your typical charging method? (home, public, etc.)

About 68% of my charging is done at home, 29% is done at a Supercharger, and 3% elsewhere.

How does your EV's range affect your driving habits?

My EV's range has minimal impact on my daily driving. I manage charging at home using a standard 120V outlet, which covers my regular needs. For longer trips, such as visits to Chicago, I plan by selecting parking facilities that provide free or low-cost charging options, allowing me to conveniently charge before returning home.

Do you experience range anxiety? If so, how do you manage it?

Not at all. I've seen plenty of people online talk about range anxiety, but I've never really felt it myself. Early on, I followed the common advice to focus less on the range and more on battery percentage. I also found it fruitful to focus on enjoying my car. :)

Do you find charging your EV at home to be cost-effective?

Absolutely. I'm someone who loves running the numbers, and at $0.16/kWh, charging my EV at home costs me roughly three times less than driving a gas car that gets around 20 mpg.

Do you have any tips or advice for those considering buying an EV?

Do thorough research and make sure you have a clear understanding of what to expect with EV ownership. The greatest cost savings typically come from charging at home rather than relying on Superchargers. Also, be aware that while you'll save significantly on fuel and maintenance, many states offset lost gas tax revenue with higher registration fees - so it's important to factor that into your budget.

I also recommend taking an extended test drive with the EV you're considering to ensure it fits your lifestyle. For example, I had the opportunity to take a 2026 Tesla Model Y home for 48 hours, and the experience really solidified my decision. Tesla also offers a referral program - if you're interested, you can use my link (tesla.com/referral/leo462551) to receive three months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) at no additional cost.
