George Chen, president of G&T Trading International Corp. and a past president of the PSI Chapter, has retired after more than 45 years in the recovered paper trading business.
Chen began his career in 1979 with Cheng Loong Corp., a corrugated linerboard manufacturer in Taiwan. He initially worked in Taiwan, but in 1982 the company relocated him to America to build its base of U.S. scrap paper suppliers. Chen and his wife, Tammy, eventually settled permanently in New Jersey in 1986.
After 18 years with Cheng Loong, Chen left the company in 1997 and founded G&T Trading, a scrap paper brokerage business with an office in Clifton, N.J. Over the next 27 years, his tireless work ethic and passion for the business earned him the respect of his peers and partners as well as the entire paper recycling industry. “His leadership, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment have been instrumental in guiding the company through its many milestones,” the company said in a press statement.
Throughout his career, Chen—who calls himself “everyone’s friend”—was active in the PSI Chapter of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) (now the Recycled Materials Association), including serving as the chapter’s president from 2008-2010. Despite the challenging economic conditions of that period, Chen helped the chapter increase its membership and led its review of the recovered paper specifications in ISRI’s Scrap Specifications Circular.
Chen also was active in the New Jersey Paper Recycling Association, which he led as president for 27 years.
“His legacy will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of working with him,” G&T Trading concluded in its press statement.
